Job Overview

The Charles Phelps Taft Research Center at the University of Cincinnati (UC) is pleased to announce a search for a 2023-24 Taft Postdoctoral Fellow. The Taft Research Center, established from the original 1930 Charles Phelps Taft Fund, supports 15 humanities and social science departments in UC’s College of Arts and Sciences and facilitates their collaboration and public impact at UC, in the region, and globally. Taft is a member of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes and the National Humanities Alliance.


Scholars who have received their Ph.D. after June 2019 in any field of inquiry in the 15 humanities and social science Taft member units (Africana Studies; Anthropology; School of Communication, Media, and Film Studies; Economics; English & Comparative Literature; Asian, Eastern European, and German Studies; History; Journalism; Judaic Studies; Mathematical Sciences; Philosophy; School of Public and International Affairs; Romance and Arabic Languages & Literatures; Sociology; and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) and related fields are invited to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship. The purpose of this Fellowship is to provide emergent, interdisciplinary scholars with time to further their work in an interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary setting, and to provide them with mentoring from a faculty member in their field. We are particularly interested in scholars whose work addresses social justice issues and/or engages with diverse publics in contemporary, historical, and/or trans/national context.


This is a one-year appointment with a salary of $60,000, possibly renewable for a second year. The position includes a $5,000 research budget and health insurance. The Fellow will teach one course per year; participate in the collegial life of the Center, which sponsors lectures, conferences, and colloquia; help develop and coordinate public engagement and community outreach events; and give an annual public presentation. The Fellow will be provided with an office at the Center and is expected to spend the year (August-May) in residence at UC.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct research in one or more Taft fields.
  • Prepare research for publication.
  • Disseminate research as appropriate to the field(s).
  • Keep informed of developments in field(s) to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.
  • Participate in Taft programming and events, as agreed upon with the Director.
  • Teach two courses (or equivalent) per academic year.

Required Education

Ph.D in any field of inquiry in the 15 humanities and social science Taft member units (Africana Studies; Anthropology; School of Communication, Media, and Film Studies; Economics; English & Comparative Literature; Asian, Eastern European, and German Studies; History; Journalism; Judaic Studies; Mathematical Sciences; Philosophy; School of Public and International Affairs; Romance and Arabic Languages & Literatures; Sociology; and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) or related field.

This Fellowship is open to all scholars, national or international, who meet eligibility requirements. Visa eligibility: International scholars outside of North America are appointed under an H-1B visa during the fellowship year at UC.


We will begin reviewing applications on June 16, 2023, and continue until the position is filled. Interviews will be held during the second half of June 2023 via Zoom.
