Assistant General Counsel, Employment and Compliance #2633 (Hybrid)

The Assistant General Counsel, Employment and Compliance will report to the Associate General Counsel, Employment and Compliance; Compliance Officer, and will serve as a key partner on a broad range of US and UK employment matters, including federal, state and local labor and employment laws and regulations, and healthcare compliance laws and regulations. This position requires a significant level of independent analysis and provision of legal advice regarding matters having company-wide impact, working cross functionally but most significantly with our people team.

You will:

  • You will ensure the business receives timely guidance regarding how to comply with all applicable employment laws and regulations; accordingly, you will be expected to maintain professional competence through continuing legal education and educational seminars relative to employment law, including relating to new and burgeoning areas such as pay transparency
  • You will draft, review, update and maintain necessary policies, procedures, notices, handbooks, and trainings for relevant teams in compliance with relevant employment law and contract requirements
  • You will assist on the review of company-wide, employee trainings
  • You will participate in and influence the decision-making process with appropriate clients and stakeholders
  • You will be responsible for the management, review and updating of employee agreements, including confidentiality, employee invention, non compete and non-solicitation provisions in prospective and current employee agreements
  • You will be expected to proactively identify and assess legal risks and opportunities within the labor/employment area and advise accordingly
  • You will assist the Associate General Counsel, Compliance and Employment, in the provision of legal advice and the resolution of significant employee grievances
  • You will provide legal interpretation and guidance to staff in the applicability of public records laws, and respond appropriately and accurately to public records requests
  • In cooperation with HR Department, you will manage and provide advice and legal representation throughout all phases of compliance audits related to federal and state EEOC, affirmative action, and wage and hour laws
  • You will oversee and manage outside counsel in employment litigation and/or drafts company response to charges of discrimination filed with state and federal administrative agencies, including claims related to wage and hour issues, EEOC matters, and claims related to workplace safety and health issues
  • You also will assist the Compliance Officer with healthcare compliance matters, including but not limited to compliance communications, trainings and policies; enterprise-wide risk assessments and interviews; investigations and remediations; contractual reviews and drafting; oversight of monitoring and auditing results; promotional materials reviews; fair market value assessments; and other compliance-related needs of the organization. Thus, this role provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in another area of law and requires a willingness and interest to do so.

Your background should include:

  • Law degree from accredited law school and active member of a state bar
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in-house and/or law firm (preferably both; life sciences experience a plus)
  • Excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication and relationship management skills
  • Exceptional organizational and planning skills and a meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and multi-task
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a self-guided manner while exercising initiative, flexibility and good judgment
  • Experience and skill in dispute avoidance and dispute resolution is preferred
  • Strong business perspective and keen business acumen required
  • Strong problem-solving skills and desire to improve processes, with the ability to work independently or in a team to develop solutions to accomplish business objectives is a must

  • This role can be remote, but ability to travel to our Menlo Park, CA and Research Triangle Park - Raleigh, NC from time to time is required
The expected, full-time, annual base pay scale for this position is $193K-$255K. Actual base pay will consider skills, experience, and location.

Based on the role, colleagues may be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan tied to company and individual performance, or an incentive plan. We also offer a long-term incentive plan to align company and colleague success over time.
