Other Conditions
Two positions, each with nine months of funding annually. Anticipated start date is August 1, 2023 or as mutually agreed. Subject to position clearance. Incoming faculty will be leaders within the new Uehiro Center for the Advancement of Oceanography within the Department of Oceanography (UC•AO; https://www.soest.hawaii.edu/oceanography/uc-ao/), and will receive research support of $150K per year for five years. Relevant research areas include any discipline within the field of oceanography. As leaders within the UC•AO, successful candidates will be expected to catalyze cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research that addresses consequential scientific questions broadly complementary to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (https://sdgs.un.org/goals).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing and sustaining a vigorous extramurally-supported, collaborative research program that complements existing expertise in the department and school.
  • Conducting outstanding classroom teaching.
  • Mentoring of students in both the graduate Oceanography and undergraduate Global Environmental Science programs.
  • Providing service to the department, school, university, and the larger scientific community

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications
  • A doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position
  • Demonstrated ability as a teacher
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement
  • Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others
  • Capability to conduct creative, high-quality research that addresses consequential scientific questions broadly complementary to departmental goals.
  • Capacity to serve in a leadership role.
  • The ability to effectively teach and mentor a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Commitment to support our shared values of inclusion, mutual respect, collaboration, and equity, so that people from every background feel welcome and can thrive .

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications
Same as Assistant Professor level, with addition of the following:
  • A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent
  • Scholarly achievement judged competent and adequate for the rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities
  • Continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in other appropriate job-related service activities
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organized assigned activities, including the supervision of work or assistants when appropriate
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues
  • Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others

Desirable Qualifications
  • Research that contributes to interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Research that involves sea-going data collection, utilizes the oceanographic setting of Hawaii, or utilizes UH research platforms.
