Position Description

In alignment with Seattle University’s mission, the Assistant/Associate Director, Student Care & Support promotes wellness, sense of belonging, and access to basic needs by connecting students with campus and local resources needed to thrive at Seattle University. The Assistant/Associate Director, Student Care & Support is a 12-month, full-time, position. Candidates who meet or exceed the preferred qualifications may be considered for the Associate Director title. This is a 3-year, term-limited position. The position may be extended on a funds-available basis.

Reporting to the Director of Wellness & Health Promotion, the Assistant/Associate Director is a member of the Seattle University CARE Team and works collaboratively with other team members to connect students to programs, resources, and services throughout the university. The Assistant/Associate Director promotes student retention by providing direct support to students who need assistance accessing resources related to mental health, physical health, basic needs, academic support, financial concerns, relationship concerns, and other barriers to their success. The Assistant/Associate Director interacts with students who may be experiencing stressful, complex, and sensitive life circumstances. In support of students’ access to basic needs, the Assistant/Associate Director also manages the Seattle University food security initiatives, which include the SU Food Pantry and Emergency Redhawk Dining Card program.

The Assistant/Associate Director must be committed to the Jesuit Catholic mission of Seattle University and the advancement of our diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives. This position requires culturally competent interpersonal communication, de-escalation skills, and the ability to recognize and prioritize situations requiring immediate attention.

Essential Functions

Case Management & Student Support (50%)

  • Serve as a member of the university CARE (Coordinated Assistance and Resource Education) Team and Threat Assessment Team.
  • Act as recorder and update case notes during weekly CARE Team meetings.
  • Manage a CARE team caseload at the direction of the Associate Provost & Dean of Students.
  • Meet with students to provide direct support, build rapport, assess risk, determine needs, develop care plans, refer to resources, and follow up at regular intervals to track progress.
  • Provide appropriate interventions for students in crisis, including on- and off-campus emergency services when concerns about imminent harm exist.
  • Facilitate communication and the exchange of information between various student-facing departments, including Student Persistence Programs, Advising, Public Safety, Housing & Residence Life, Disability Services, Student Support Center, Student Conduct, Wellness & Health Promotion, Athletics, academic departments, and others.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, students, parents/families, and others about how to respond to various student concerns.
  • Use Slate for Student Success to alert appropriate faculty and staff about students at risk of attrition or those who may require additional support.
  • Create, maintain, and update case notes related to encounters with students of concern in Maxient.
  • Notify the Department of Public Safety & the Office of the Dean of Students when encountering a student in crisis or in need of immediate assistance.
  • Supervise one half-time Graduate Assistant for Care & Crisis Response.

Food Security Initiatives Management (35%)

  • Provide leadership to and manage the Seattle University food security initiatives, which include the SU Food Pantry and Emergency Redhawk Dining Card program.
  • Supervise undergraduate office assistants for food security initiatives & organize student volunteers to staff the pantry.
  • Manage inventory and physical food pantry space.
  • Develop and implement assessment of student needs and usage of food security resources.
  • Order and distribute Emergency Redhawk Dining Cards for students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Research off-campus food resources and provide education about food benefits, such as SNAP and Apple Care (Medicaid), for interested or eligible students.
  • Manage a $30,000 operating budget and oversee the appropriate use of related donor funds.
  • Identify and conduct targeted outreach for specific student groups with elevated food security needs, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, undocumented, first-generation, international, veteran, online students, and other communities.

Education & Training (10%)

  • Develop outreach and training programs related to specific student support topics, such as how to refer to the CARE Team, food security initiatives, basic needs access, mental health resources, faculty and staff development programs, and others.
  • Facilitate training programs for various student leaders and groups, including Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, Health & Wellness Crew (HAWC), among others.
  • Participate in Mental Health First Aid facilitator training and facilitate Mental Health First Aid training for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Participate in weekly Wellness & Health Promotion staff meetings, CARE Team meetings, and case management team meetings.
  • Meet regularly with direct supervisor and the Associate Provost & Dean of Students.

Other Duties (5%)

  • Serve on divisional and university committees and working groups as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • A bachelor's degree in education, psychology, social work or a related field and 3 or more years of professional experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and a commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Seattle University.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in education, psychology, social work or a related field and 2 or more years of professional experience in a higher education setting.

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $58,000 - $71,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
