Modeling and Simulation Engineer

About Atomic Machines:

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out.  The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About This Role:
  • We are seeking an experienced, seasoned Modeling and Simulation Engineer to join our growing team within the Devices group. An ideal candidate should have experience in developing both analytical and numerical models involving multiple connected physics domains. You should feel comfortable identifying critical system attributes of an existing device or a future concept and use them to derive a first or higher order parametric model to perform performance optimization, process sensitivity analysis, etc. Familiarity with modeling concepts (equivalent circuit modeling, multiscale modeling, etc.) and a variety of software tools (COMSOL, Ansys, Spice, etc.) is important to be successful in this role. You will be required to have an in-depth understanding of the governing physics over multiple domains (mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal, etc). The length scales involved range from sub-micron to the full size of our devices, which can be several millimeters to centimeters. This is an excellent career opportunity for a professional with a proven track record of creating high-quality, validated multiphysics models, who is excited about using their skill set to help create new classes of devices to be fabricated and manufactured at scale on our revolutionary manufacturing platform. The ideal applicant thrives in a highly collaborative workplace, actively engages in the development process and is excellent at documenting and presenting work products.

What you’ll do:
  • Determine critical system attributes and set up analytical models covering multiple physics domains for existing and future devices.
  • Define figures of merit and boundary conditions based on system and requirements as well as input from other engineers.
  • Perform parameter sweeps to iteratively improve the design and/or the mode.
  • Perform process sensitivity analysis and other engineering analyses as needed to improve robustness of designs and processes.
  • Set up multiphysics Finite Elements Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models for static, transient, and harmonic analyses to aid design and process decisions.
  • Systematically document methods and related checks (e.g., mesh convergence.)Document and visualize results and present findings and recommendations to the team.
  • Recommend model validation experiments and use results of such experiments to validate and improve models.
  • Work collaboratively in cross-functional engineering teams with prototype engineers, device designers and software, electrical and mechanical engineers.
  • Train other engineers in modeling and simulation tools.

What you’ll need:
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience building multiphysics analytical models and simulations.
  • Strong foundation in multi-physics (electrostatic, electromagnetic, piezoelectric, piezoresistive, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, structural mechanics, etc.) and strong analytical skills.
  • Finite element analysis experience using COMSOL or Ansys in multiple coupled physics.
  • Resourceful, flexible and adaptable; no task is too big or too small.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently and/or cross-functionally.
  • Detail orientation, excellent adherence to scientific method.
  • Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

Bonus points for:
  • Experience with SPICE-based circuit simulation or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling.
  • Programming experience, particularly in Python.
  • Experience in computer aided design (CAD) using Fusion 360, SolidWorks, NX or other CAD tools.
  • Experience with data visualization and analysis tools such as JMP, Matlab, Pandas, matplotlib, etc.
  • Industry experience in Agile, ICSM, and product development processes.
  • Experience with MEMS design or manufacturing.
