Belonging Coordinator – BYU Athletics

Job Summary

In BYU Athletics, we believe in pursuing excellence in everything that we do, and belonging is a critical component of excellence. This position assists in the strategic vision and program implementation for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within BYU Athletics for both BYU Athletics employees and student-athletes. Intentional efforts will be made on behalf of the following marginalized identities: racial/ ethnically diverse, international, LGBTQ+ & Same-Sex Attracted, and religiously diverse.

The Belonging Coordinator will report directly to the Associate AD - Student-Athlete Development, Diversity & Inclusion. The Belonging Coordinator will liaison closely with all sports teams and administrative units and step-in for the Associate AD as needed.

What You’d Be Responsible For

Community Building

  • Establish and oversee student-athlete affinity groups
  • Coordinate and execute events, activities, and initiatives that recognize and celebrate heritage months
  • Manage logistics for DEIB-focused trips and excursions
  • Manage logistics for community building events (activities, guest speakers, team building initiatives, etc.)

Data Collection

  • Host and facilitate focus groups among BYU Athletics employees and student-athletes
  • Liaison with BYU’s Office of Assessment and Planning to create and distribute
  • Climate surveys
  • Feedback surveys
  • Satisfaction surveys
  • Event evaluation surveys
  • Analyze survey data and present information to senior leaders (reports and presentations)
  • Document, preserve, and report on all BYU Athletics initiatives, projects, events, endeavors, and efforts

Education

  • Compile educational resources for BYU Athletics employees and student-athletes
  • Create content for Cougar News (department newsletter)
  • Produce promotional material for events, initiatives, and DEIB practices
  • Assist in creating educational material to be used and presented in the Civil Rights Seminar Class (will act as TA for this course)
  • Assist in training BYU Athletics Diversity & Inclusion Council members to be first responders to Issues of Belonging within their teams/ units
  • Assist in selecting guest speakers for various diversity & inclusion initiatives as directed by the Assoc. AD of Student-Athlete Development, Diversity & Inclusion

Campus Partnerships

  • Liaison and work closely with our mental health staff, team trainers, and our strength & conditioning department to create, develop, and implement programming specific to the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health of our student-athletes
  • Liaison closely with BYU’s Office of Belonging and other BYU DEIB professionals to create, develop, and implement programming

Issues of Belonging

  • Act as a first responder to any and all issues regarding prejudice, discrimination, harassment, inappropriate/ disrespectful behavior, etc.
  • Develop trusting relationships with coaches and student-athletes

What Qualifies You to Apply?

Required: Master’s degree and work experience in a Division 1 Athletics program


Employee Class: 1/2 Time (Basic)

Work Location: Provo Campus
