Lead Pyrometallurgical Engineer

Founded in 2019, Brimstone is an innovative industrial startup with a proprietary, efficient, and deeply decarbonized process for producing Ordinary Portland Cement. We’re now growing our all-star team of sharp, mission-driven, collaborative professionals as we continue to refine our process and move towards construction of our first production facilities.

Job Brief

The Lead Pyrometallurgical Engineer on the Engineering team will be responsible for design of capital projects spanning from pilot to full industrial scale facilities. This role will include leading the specification, procurement, and construction of capital equipment. Additionally, this role will include management of engineering, procurement and construction firms who will be preparing various studies and design packages. Equipment to be specified includes solids handling and pyrometallurgical applications for preparation of metal concentrates and cement. This position reports to the Director of Engineering Projects. Periodic travel to the Oakland Office and vendor facilities for factory acceptance testing (FAT) will be required.  The initial work location will be in Reno, and will transition to the Reno/Tahoe Industrial Complex or surrounding areas as construction and site improvements commence.  

This role is based in Reno, Nevada as an on-site position.

Key Focus Areas of the role may include:

  • Develop design standards and templates for use in EPC managed project

  • Design and advise on solids handling systems for material transport

  • Design and advise on pyrometallurgical equipment including, but not limited to, fluidized bed reactors, hearth kilns, rotary kilns, cyclones, and supporting auxiliary equipment

  • Partner with EPC firms and manage the relationship to execute studies, design packages, safety evaluations, and issued for construction (IFC) packages

  • Responsible for the development of Safe Operating Procedures as a member of the technical team

  • Train operations and maintenance personnel on safe equipment operations

  • Analyze various types of plant data to determine continuous improvement strategies

  • Coordinate with construction contractors throughout the building process 

  • Identify and resolve equipment related problems in a continuous operating environment this may include resolving issues with pumps, mixers, crushers, mills, kilns, and other reactor equipment

For this role, we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical, Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering

  • 10+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience in process, mining, mineral processing, metallurgical or cement industries 

  • Experience evaluating, sizing, designing, and modifying pyrometallurgical equipment

  • History of specification of pyrometallurgical process equipment and packaged systems

  • Experience working with manufacturing firms for fabrication of skid mounted and miscellaneous metal equipment

  • Experience in process scale-up

  • Strong organizational and management skills and history of mentoring

  • Prior experience with capital project execution including specifications, datasheets, process equipment validation, and procurement

  • History of managing third party vendors including EPC firms, vendors, and contractors

  • Experience with industrial scale processes and equipment in operation

  • Technical writing proficiency

  • Team player with a history of cross collaborative project design work

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time

  • Ability to lift general instrumentation up to 20 pounds

 

Additional skills that are preferred but not required:

  • Electrical experience with mechanical systems for more advanced troubleshooting

  • Experience with Kilns and other large rotating equipment

  • Experience with CFD modelling software for thermal analysis

  • HVAC system design and troubleshooting

  • Design experience with tools, fixtures, and machining equipment

  • Largely self-directed workflow development with a bias towards solution development and action
