Bus Driver

NO CDL required to apply! We will offer a $1,000 signing bonus to all new drivers that do not hold a CDL license or a $3,000 signing bonus to any new hire who already hold a CDL Class B with P and S (passenger and school bus) endorsements.

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the safe transportation of children to and from school and special events. Limited supervision is exercised over school bus drivers.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Operates the school bus to pick up and deliver students to/from school in a safe manner.

 Enforces appropriate conduct standards for students and makes reports as necessary.

 Performs pre-trip inspections of school bus and reports operating and equipment
deficiencies.

 Washes bus, cleans bus inside and out, fuels bus and checks fluid levels.

 Operates bus on designated route and picks up and delivers children at designated bus stops at designated times.

 Permits no student to leave the bus at other than his/her designated stop without written permission of the principal and/or student’s parents.

 Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations.

 Transports only authorized students, school personnel and/or authorized chaperones on special trips.

 Reports all accidents and completes required reports.

 Conducts periodic emergency bus evacuation drills.

 Transports students to special events and field trips.

 Assists in notifying other drivers in the event of delayed openings or cancellation of school.

 Maintains accurate record of time spent driving and submits timesheet monthly.

 Contacts Dispatch when a substitute driver is needed.

 Arrives at school no later than ten minutes before school dismisses to ensure the timely transportation of all students.

 Stops on the right of the highway for receiving and discharging passengers, only at designated stops, where the vehicle can be seen for a safe distance from both directions.

 Comes to a full stop when approaching a railroad crossing; looks both ways; proceeds only when it is absolutely safe to cross the track; and does not change gears when crossing railroad tracks.

 Notifies the Central Garage immediately, in case of breakdown.

 Fills the gasoline tank only after all passengers have been discharged from the bus.

 Accounts for all flares, First Aid kits, fire extinguishers and other equipment on bus.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of valid driving experience.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

 Applicants must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

 Must be able to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications.

 Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License.

 Must be able to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with proper endorsements to operate a school bus.

 Must submit a copy of Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) record. If you have not been a resident of the state of Virginia for at least five (5) years, you much contact the DMV office in the city and state you resided and get a copy of your driving record.

 No bus driver may be employed in another capacity later than 11:00 p.m. prior to driving his/her morning routes the following day.

 Must successfully pass required: physical examination; Fit for Duty performance evaluation; TB Skin Test; Drug Test; and fingerprinting and criminal background check.

 Must submit the following references as required: Moral Character Form, required by the State Board of Education and three (3) business reference forms required by Stafford County School Board.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 Knowledge and skill in the safe operation of a school bus.

 Knowledge and understanding of laws and regulations governing Pupil Transportation from the Department of Education and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

 Ability to follow established bus route and schedule.

 Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment.

 Ability to assist children using patience and understanding.

 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, guardians, the general public, fellow employees and students.

 Ability to use appropriate written and verbal communication including basic English grammar and usage.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 Work environment is indoors and outdoors with regular exposure to weather conditions; in proximity to the roadway; near moving mechanical parts and traffic; and in confined spaces.

 The employee is exposed to fumes, dirt/dust, gases, and the risk of electric shock.

 The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 Must possess the physical ability to work primarily with fingers, perceive the nature of sounds, make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance.

 Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: feeling, grasping, handling, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity and walking.
