In recruiting for team members, we welcome the unique contributions that you can bring to us and the work we do.The Center for Health Statistics and Informatics (CHSI) is responsible for department-wide initiatives to improve the effectiveness of our work through better health information systems, increased application of epidemiologic methods of analysis, strong liaisons with public health organizations and schools of public health, and effective partnerships with local health agencies and professionals. CHSI houses the Office of Vital Records, responsible for registering all California vital events and providing birth, death, and marriage records to the public. In addition, CHSI is involved in many cross-cutting and innovative data projects including the statewide Open Data Portal and Health Information Exchange.Free Parking in Natomas!Job Description And DutiesThis position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by performing varied and complex technical data analytical tasks, including data analysis and validation to ensure data quality.The Research Data Analyst II (RDA II) validates and verifies data quality of demographic and medical data on primary vital statistics data sources (i.e., birth, death, and fetal death data) using various software applications and coding languages (e.g., SAS, SQL, R, Excel).The incumbent aids the unit in developing protocols to reduce future data quality issues, works as a liaison with both internal and external stakeholders, and periodically creates and checks vital statistics data products. Represents the Branch at various data committees, task forces, and workgroups.The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Research Data Supervisor I, Chief of the Data Quality and Analysis Unit (DQAU).Desirable QualificationsIn addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.• Strong attention to detail.• Work both independently and as part of a team.• Perform work accurately and thoroughly to meet deadlines.• Data analysis background with strong computer skills in a coding language (i.e., SAS, R, SQL), Microsoft Excel, and any data visualization software (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).Telework InformationThis position may be eligible for telework up to three (3) days per week and is required to report in-person to the designated headquarters office location a minimum of two (2) days per week. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions.
