Program Description:
We are seeking a Mechanical Systems Engineer to join our team supporting the National Weather Service (NWS) Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Norman, Oklahoma. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in mechanical engineering, with a focus on maintaining and enhancing the operational efficiency and longevity of radar systems.
This position is based in Norman, Oklahoma, supporting the NWS NEXRAD Radar Operations Center. Candidates must be capable of working onsite and collaborating with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and stakeholders. This position may require occasional travel to field sites for inspections, installations, or maintenance support.
Job Responsibilities:
Design, analyze, and implement mechanical systems and components to support the sustainment and modernization of NEXRAD radar systems.
Perform system-level evaluations to ensure mechanical subsystems meet performance and reliability standards.
Provide technical oversight for the maintenance and repair of radar components, including structures, cooling systems, and supporting infrastructure.
Conduct root cause analyses on mechanical failures and develop corrective action plans.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical and software engineers, to integrate mechanical designs with radar systems.
Prepare engineering documentation, including design reports, maintenance plans, and test procedures.
Support field installations, troubleshooting, and upgrades of radar systems as needed.
Stay updated on industry standards and emerging technologies relevant to radar mechanical systems.
Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations in all engineering activities.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
5+ years of experience in mechanical systems design, analysis, and troubleshooting, preferably in radar or similar systems.
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and finite element analysis (FEA) tools.
Strong understanding of thermal management, structural integrity, and material properties.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Effective communication skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
Experience with radar systems or similar high-reliability mechanical systems.
Knowledge of NEXRAD radar systems and their operational requirements.
Familiarity with military or government engineering standards.
Hands-on experience with field maintenance and repair of mechanical systems.
