Public Art Associate Project Manager

Overview

Under the supervision of the Director of Public Art, the Public Art Associate Project Manager administers and/or reviews short-term and long-term public art projects that are proposed for or intended to be placed on the City of Boston property. In collaboration with the Public Art Project Manager and Senior Public Art Project Manager, these include City-Initiated projects funded through the Percent for Art program and Community Initiated projects supported by external funding or hybrid funding sources.

They will be responsible for the management of programs such as PaintBox and MOAC mural programs. They will ensure that project proposals comply with City of Boston policies and curatorial vision, in order to be successfully reviewed by the Boston Art Commission (BAC).

The Public Art Associate Project Manager works collaboratively with other Arts and Culture and City of Boston staff. This position will work directly with artists and stakeholders during public art project development, community engagement, and implementation, as well as with inter-agency project teams of contractors, engineers, architects, and operations staff to manage the production of commissioned artworks. This role will ensure that all projects follow City guidelines for commissioning public art, including equitable procurement and City approval processes. They will need to be flexible in their approach, adapting in response to the evolving public art field locally and globally.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the development of public art projects initiated and driven by community members, artists, and the City of Boston.
  • Creates and manages project workflows using project management software.
  • Manages artist selection processes and creates budgets and payment schedules to ensure timely completion of public art projects on or under budget.
  • Manages artist participation in the project design process, working with the Public Art team to facilitate the integration of artwork into the relevant construction and engineering documents.
  • Develops and monitors scopes of work, RFPs, payment milestones, and project schedules.
  • Monitors the progress of artwork fabrication and ensures that work is produced on schedule and within budget.
  • Plans, coordinates, documents, and facilitates project-related community meetings in collaboration with the Public Art team.
  • Attends monthly meetings of the Boston Art Commission and prepares reports and presentations on the project process and approval status.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • Two (2) to three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, educational or professional project management experience, preferably in the area of public art.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred and may account for two (2) years of applicable work experience (specifically a major in art, art history, arts administration, urban planning, community development, architecture, landscape architecture, construction management preferred, or civil engineering).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and considerable project management skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel) and Google Applications (Docs, Slides, Sheets). 
  • Strong organizational and administration skills, including note-taking and data entry.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

 

Preferred:

  • Applicants with experience in project management software, especially Asana.
  • Public speaking ability to present information to small and large audiences representing diverse community groups and interests.
  • Ability to facilitate stakeholder meetings and conduct webinars and workshops on relevant topics.
  • Working knowledge of artwork/architectural fabrication techniques, methodologies, and materials. 
  • Highly advantageous skills are familiarity with municipal and non-governmental organizations in Boston that provide support services to artists, creatives, and design professionals.
  • Knowledge of Boston neighborhoods and demonstrated interest in the history of civic engagement and volunteerism.
