Communications Technician

Position: Communications Technician
Location: Avery
Starting rate of pay: $60.11 (1st step increase after 6 months: $62.07 )
Hours: Monday - Friday: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
DUTIES: (Essential Job Responsibilities)
  • Install operate, install settings/configurations, provision, maintain and certify Portland General Electric’s Voice and Data communication systems, Telephone systems, PBX's, Microwave radio systems, Land Mobile Radio systems, Supervisory Control Systems, Substation Protection equipment, Telemetry, Fiber Optics, Vehicle Location, Smart Grid Infrastructure, Security Systems, WiFi and VoIP Equipment, Computers and associated switching or termination equipment.
  • Interface with associated groups for work order review and attend project meetings when required.
  • Use specialized electronic test equipment to assure that equipment performs according to engineering and vendor specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Interface with outside telephone companies to support troubleshooting of leased telephone circuits to substations, generation plants, and other PGE facilities.
  • Install and maintain wiring and cabling used for voice, data, and signal communication systems.
  • Occasionally design and install circuit modifications to older equipment to allow its use with newer equipment.
  • Write clear and accurate trouble analysis and repair reports.
  • Keep current in electronic technology through independent study and attending vendor and other training schools. Examinations may be given to obtain vendor certifications.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs at unscheduled hours and work on temporary assignments at other locations within Oregon and South-West Washington State.
  • Complete independent work assignments, but may be assigned to work with a Senior Communications Technician, other company personnel, or contractors as needed
  • When assigned, will direct the work of other Communications Technicians or contractors.
  • Responsible proper use of vehicles, tools and materials supplied by the Company.
QUALIFICATIONS: (Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required)
  • High school graduate and two years of additional training in an electronics technician curriculum (community college, technical institute, or military training).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driving medical card.
  • Five years' experience in the trade, preferably in a power utility environment.
  • Obtain FCC General Radio Telephone operator's license or its equivalent (such as successful completion of NARTE or NABOR) with a radio telephone endorsement within six months.
  • Competent at reading engineering drawings and interpreting manufacturers' instruction manuals and test procedures.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Must be skilled in the use of personal computer, and software to include MS Office, Visio, Terminal Emulation Software, Work Order Management, and vendor specific equipment configuration software.
  • Will be required to live within a reasonable distance of headquarters.
  • Physical Demands; Climbing Towers with heights of 200 FT or more, Working in Confined Spaces, and some heavy lifting.
  • Pass practical and/or written pre-employment examination.
  • Preferred: State of Oregon Low Voltage License.
  • IP Network certification desired.
Salary Range:
$57.80 - $64.70
Starting pay is listed in the job posting above. Salary range determined by the current collective bargaining agreement and may include step increases based on time in the position.
