Inpatient Services Director, North Texas Medical Center, Gainesville, TX

The Inpatient Services Director reports to the CNO and is responsible for the provision of high quality, cost effective patient care in the ICU and Med/Surg Departments.  The Inpatient Services Director coordinates the provision of age specific patient care that is consistent with the policies, procedures and standards of professional nursing practice and consistent with the policies and procedures in place at NTMC. Consults with staff, physicians, and the CNO on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure that patient needs are met. Participates in performance improvement activities within the department.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for the cost-effective management of human resources in the department. Staffs according to patient volume and acuity; monitors overtime and agency utilization and assists with scheduling staff to fill open shifts as necessary
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.  Ensures that staff supports a culture of quality and safety.
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy.  This includes pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population.
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain.  Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.  Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring; identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately.
  • Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing, glucometers) per Clinical Laboratory’s and the patient care unit’s policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret the results of waived tests (point-of-care testing, glucometers); takes appropriate action on waived test results.
  • Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition.
  • Follows the six (6) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching appropriate.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Supports a culture of quality and safety.
  • Orients new employees to the Intensive Care and Med/Surg units
  • Participates in problem solving with other healthcare team members related to management of the clinical care area.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Proficient in interpreting EKG

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current Texas Registered Nurse license. 
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Preferred two (2) years of critical care or emergency nursing experience.
  • Current BLS Certification
  • ACLS certified within 90 days of hire. 
  • PALS certified within 90 days of hire.
  • NIHSS certification within 90 days of hire.
  • CCRN preferred           

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position requires the ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds. 
  • May be required to assist with patients or equipment up to 500 pounds.  T
  • the individual will be required to stand for long periods, push, pull, lift, bend, kneel, twist, and reach above shoulder level.  
  • Requires vision and hearing skills corrected to near normal range.
  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or an approved medical or religious accommodation.
