Campus Life Enterprise Services (CLES) is the primary revenue-generating unit within Student and Campus Life. As a part of the larger CLES unit, and within Residential and Event Services (RES), the Student Center Facilities Support Team is responsible for the intensive and detailed custodial maintenance, event support and audio-visual (AV) support of Cornell’s Student Centers, and other assigned area(s). The Student Centers are active hubs around campus that allow students, and other members of the community, a way to experience Cornell’s thriving social scene by providing a great place to meet people, grab a bite to eat, or find a place to study. This team is driven by a passion for attention to details in order to provide an excellent customer experience.
The Support Custodian SO-02 ensures the cleanliness and operational readiness of key public use areas; including lobbies, offices, classrooms, conference rooms, dining halls, restrooms, and other assigned community use facility spaces. Ensuring that our building users, visitors, and customers are able to enjoy clean and well-maintained community spaces is critical to the overall success of our business model, and the Support Custodian plays an essential role in assessing custodial maintenance needs and executing tasks that ensure that our high standards are consistently met.
A successful SO-02 Support Custodian will regularly demonstrate effective interpersonal and customer services skills to effectively and clearly communicate with a variety of building guests and students. Consistently and effectively performing both highly-detailed and labor-intensive custodial support tasks will be indicators of success in the role. The successful support custodian will also demonstrate the ability to be creative and flexible at all times as schedules, shifts, locations, and daily tasks change rapidly to support special events or unforeseen circumstances.
This is position is part of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The current rate of pay is listed in the collective bargaining agreement here: https://hr.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/2023-04/uaw.pdf and starts at $21.81/hour.
Location and schedule assignments will be based on business needs and include varying shifts. Position(s) may require nights/weekends/holiday coverage based on business needs.
Required Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of relevant experience in a customer service field, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Must be able to effectively read and write in English.
Basic computer knowledge and troubleshooting experience
Must poses & maintain a valid NY State driver’s license
Physical Requirements include:
Able to lift 50 lbs. consistently throughout the shift moving tables, chairs, etc.
Able to operate necessary power equipment (i.e. floor machines, vacuums, buffers, etc.)
Able to climb an 8 ft. ladder.
Able to stand for long periods of time
Must be able to work in all weather conditions and extreme temperatures for extended periods.
Must be free of debilitating dust allergies, or have the ability to manage such allergy.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional education beyond high school or additional experience in a custodial role
Knowledge and previous experience working in a Student Center, Event Center, and/or Conference Center operation preferred.
Previous experience performing event setups (i.e. experience setting up tables, chairs, equipment, skirting, etc.) as well demonstrated proficiency in basic audiovisual support
