Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Data Analytics, the Data Analyst is responsible for the requirements gathering, analysis, modeling and data design that yields solutions to support the university’s data-driven decision-making. The Data Analyst focuses on data quality and data governance; working collaboratively with university departments, and our technology and data governance teams, to build an empowered W&M community that manages data as an asset.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Leading the development of business cases through requirements gathering by interviewing W&M personnel at all levels of the organization.
- Gathering and analyzing data requirements and data flows to other systems; Transforming data requirements into logical data models.
- Translating and architecting gathered requirements into Qlik visualizations and data stories.
- Developing dashboards and reporting methodologies and training end-users in their utilization.
- Preparing and presenting reports that are understandable by non-technical users, enabling stakeholders to make important decisions based on various facts and trends.
- Recommending re-engineered business processes and/or system modifications and devising data governance strategies.
- Teaching data management and data governance best practices across all W&M working groups.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Strong analytical, data-gathering, and problem-solving skills with the ability to model data and develop strategies to support the university’s needs.
- Experience conducting and documenting needs assessments related to data requests.
- Experience in the design, development, and implementation of dashboards and operational reporting.
- Experience with converting data results into data stories to ensure accurate end-user interpretation of results.
- Working knowledge of SQL, reporting tools (e.g, Tableau, Qlik Sense, Power BI, SAS, R or Python – Statistical programming), and visualization and data discovery tools.
- Working knowledge of common ERP systems and associated nomenclature.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work collaboratively with team members and effectively support business users in a professional manner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Science in data science and analytics.
- Experience working in higher education with data management practices.
- Experience working with the Ellucian Suite or other enterprise-wide systems. (Examples: Banner, Salesforce, Slate, Blackbaud, Learning Management Tools).
- Experience using SQL Developer; as well as Qlik, SAS, or similar enterprise reporting tools.
- Experience with implementing data and document retention rules and providing integration solutions using document management systems.
- Experience with data definition development, data modeling, data quality, and organizational alignment.
- Experience presenting analytics outcomes to C-suite management and the ability to elicit cooperation across multiple levels of an organization.
Advertised Pay Range
Up to 73,000, commensurate with experience
