Data Analyst

The Data Analyst uses professional concepts and organizational objectives to resolve issues in creative and effective ways. The individual works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. The individual accesses data, identifying cost and operational performance improvement opportunities and prepares summary analyses that communicate findings and recommendations. The individual works closely with the Data Analytics Manager, faculty, Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) leadership, key stakeholders and outside consultants. The incumbent will build and maintain reporting tools.

This position also provides detailed reporting and analysis of department clinical operations down to the faculty level, monthly oversight reports to DEM leadership and data analysis for various research projects. Analyzes data to: (1) assess options for projects related to both research and clinical care / operations; (2) plan for and implement new research and clinical projects; and (3) suggest alternative methodologies. Uses experience, knowledge, and understanding of financial data, clinical and claims data and systems to improve the department’s clinical and operational outcomes and to assist with departmental research objectives and grant deliverables.

The individual exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Contacts are both internal and external to the department at all levels.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) provides emergency medical care to approximately 150,000 patients annually at the UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals at Mission Bay and Oakland and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. DEM administrative and research staff supports the work of 80 full-time faculty, 70+ part-time attendings, a residency program, fellowship programs and over 300 housestaff and students each year. Our vision is to be the leader in compassionate, innovative and equitable emergency care for all people at all times.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum three years of relevant experience
  • Thorough knowledge of business intelligence functions, analytics, industry standards and best practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant internal databases, BI applications and tools. Ability to produce high-quality reports and documentation.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex information, assess problems, and develop and effective solutions.
  • Detail oriented, with ability to manage time and organize competing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with a broad range of professional and technical staff.
  • Proven ability to serve as a technical resource providing advice and counsel on business intelligence issues.
  • Expertise in extracting data from administrative and electronic health record data sets to provide desired data. Competence with SQL programming to extract data from Clarity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with UCSF professional and hospital financial systems, data, policies, and procedures; HIPAA
  • Experience with Epic Reporting Workbench, Crystal Reports, Clarity database, and Business Objects
  • Experience with UCSF APeX clinical systems, data, policies and procedures
  • Experience creating and managing dashboards on Tableau
  • Competence and familiarity with software tools such as R, STATA, SAS, or SPSS
  • Experience with REDCap
  • Epic Clinical Data Model (must be certified within the first year)
  • Epic Financial Data Model (must be certified within the first year)
