Deputy Director Museum Operations - The Wolfsonian

Provides leadership, strategic direction, and oversight of the integrated operations of the curatorial, exhibitions, and registration/collections teams, aligned with the vision, mission, and strategic goals of The Wolfsonian. Working with the Director and leadership, the Deputy Director will foster initiatives utilizing curatorial activities, exhibitions, and collections to engage, educate, and inform, increasing institutional awareness, attendance, and audience participation through dynamic and forward-thinking projects. Oversee the management of the museum and library collections, numbering more than 200,000 items, to promote accessibility and sustainable preservation. Collaborate with the Director, Development Director, and leadership to shape donor cultivation and outreach strategies that drive support for the institution to enhance its
reputation locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. As a chief content officer, the Deputy Director is committed and accountable to the excellence of scholarship, public outreach, audience development, collections care and display, and institutional development. Establish objectives and review processes for the departments and personnel in their charge to optimize performance and professional growth.

  • Reviews and develops initiatives and plans to grow and sustain and care for the collections, presents engaging and thoughtful exhibitions, promotes scholarship and research, and expands accessibility to The Wolfsonian's collections and content through the development of physical spaces and digital environments.
  • Leads immediate-action and multi-year plans for curatorial, exhibitions, and collections programs to increase visitor attendance and engagement and to enhance the Wolfsonian's reputation and financial position.
  • Ensures professional care of the collection by curatorial and collection staff, following best practices in collection management and conforming to the American Alliance of Museums and the Association of Art Museums Directors codes of ethics, conflict of interest policies, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Oversees the Wolfsonian's curatorial and exhibition programs, ensuring excellence of scholarship and identifying target project collaborators as well as potential partners or venues for touring exhibitions.
  • Guides the Wolfsonian's role as a research center, including scholarship and documentation to support a publication program that provides a lasting record of exhibitions, collections, and scholarly contributions to the field in traditional and online formats.
  • Oversees curatorial, exhibition, and collections budgets and staff assignments in ways that ensure a balanced budget and prioritize success in meeting the Wolfsonian's strategic goals. Assists the Director in compiling budgets and monitoring all projects' finances and cost controls under the Deputy Director's supervision.
  • Works with Advisory Board committees and working groups comprised of donors, Deans, faculty, students, peer educators, and Wolfsonian staff to deepen the use of the Wolfsonian collection for teaching and advanced research.
  • Works closely with the Director and Wolfsonian leadership to develop strategies to meet the Wolfsonian's academic, cultural, educational, and financial goals. Works with the Director and Development Director to identify funding sources and promote curatorial, exhibitions, and collections activities.
  • Oversees, assigns, and recognizes the work of the curatorial, collections, and exhibitions departments, guest curators, and university affiliates. Develops and maintains an environment of accountability to departmental and institutional goals. Coaches and encourages staff to strengthen professional skills and embrace collaboration across all Wolfsonian departments and teams. Motivates, reviews the work of, and leads results-oriented curatorial, collections, and exhibition teams.
  • Serves as a spokesperson for The Wolfsonian to funders, other arts organizations, the press, and the public.
  • Participates and collaborates with the museum's sister institution, The Wolfsonian in Genoa, Italy, and other similar world-renowned institutions to identify and implement programmatic opportunities to further The Wolfsonian's vision and mission.
  • Participates in broader Wolfsonian strategic planning and institutional development activities focusing on advocacy for curatorial, collection, and exhibition interests and roles. Develops annual curatorial, collection, and exhibition work plans, establishes programs to monitor progress in achieving work plan objectives, and adjusts and updates activities as necessary.
  • Joins and contributes to pan-institutional efforts to develop and deploy digital access and experiences, both onsite and online.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline and eight (8) years' experience in associated discipline with several years in a management role having a significant organizational impact.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in design history or related field, with an emphasis on the late 19th to mid-20th century, or equivalent level of education and experience required (Ph.D. preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience fostering curatorial, exhibition, and collections collaborations desired.
  • Proven success with donor development and attracting funding from individuals, grants, and foundations.
  • Understanding the academic, museological, and technical skills needed within a museum.
  • Recognition by peers as a leader in the field.

  • Must attend meetings off campus and occasionally attend functions on weekends and evening
  • On call 24 hour by 7 day for possible emergency situations.
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and at locations outside of the University
  • Travel to FIU Campus
