We are a nonprofit, donor-supported organization that has raised and invested billions of dollars to help develop cystic fibrosis therapies that have changed the lives of people with this disease. Nearly every CF medicine available today was made possible because of Foundation support.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director, Accounts Payable (AP) Services will play a key role in enhancing the procure-to-pay function at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The ideal candidate will be equal parts project manager, process architect, strategic thought partner, passionate developer of talent, and problem solver. Reporting to the Controller, this position will lead the Foundation’s daily AP operations. This role will be the face of the AP team and must demonstrate a high degree of customer service to meet the needs of various stakeholders. This is a hybrid role based in Bethesda, MD, and requires 2-3 days per week in the Bethesda office.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Process Improvement
  • Review, identify, and develop best in class procure-to-pay procedures while driving process improvement, creating efficiency, and adding value to the organization.
  • In close collaboration with key stakeholders and Business Services Group (BSG) leadership, direct and deliver procure to pay continuous improvement projects. This includes identifying needs, facilitating conversations, driving alignment, project management, execution and development and execution of communications, training, and stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the Workday accounts payable, supplier and expense modules. Lead testing efforts and participate in the Workday Governance team.
  • Responsible for maintenance and documentation of AP processes and procedures, including training staff.
  • Supports Controller and BSG leadership with design and implementation of new guidance, internal controls, policies, processes, and systems.
  • Coordinate and monitor to ensure the quarter Finance security review are complete.
Team Leadership
  • Provide leadership necessary to continue to build and maintain a best-in-class accounts payable department and develop a strong team.
  • Effectively mentor, coach, and develop team of eight, with two direct reports. Including performance management and coaching.
  • Design and implement professional development plans and business continuity plans for the team.
  • Accountable for team results, including overall quality and timeliness of payments and effective communication with stakeholders across organization.
Accounts Payable Daily Operations
  • Responsible for all daily activities for the accounts payable function including, but not limited to disbursements, invoice/expense management, supplier management, policies, fraud prevention, and vendor database.
  • Monitor and ensure Workday cases / inquiries are resolved promptly and professionally. Resolve escalated internal and external customer issues.
  • Ensures that all procedures and functions processed through AP team are in compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records regarding payments to suppliers.
  • Provide oversight and quality review for a variety of tasks, including the review of monthly closing journal entries, supervising, and coordinating the monthly grant reconciliation process, review of the monthly account reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts.
  • Establish and maintain controls to ensure monthly accounts payable closing and reconciliations completed timely and accurately recorded on the general ledger.
  • Ensure that the appropriate internal control environment is maintained, including compliance with accounting principles and adhere with company policies.
  • Oversee corporate card administration, compliance, reporting, recordation, and reconciliation.
  • Accountable for timely filing and mailing of 1099s.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, or related degree; MBA/CPA a plus.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience with at least five years in a leadership role.
  • Experience and knowledge of procure-to-pay, including travel and expense.
  • Ability to develop people: Experience or ability to successfully manage and develop people; experience in mentoring teams.
  • Strong project management skills and change management skills.
  • Experience with process mapping desired.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of US GAAP and internal controls.
  • Experience with audits, understanding of experience with complex accounting, internal controls, financials systems, financial statements, and processes.
  • Experience with large ERPs systems required, Workday highly desired.
  • Proven advanced technical skills (Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience in non-profit environment preferred. Experience with working with a similar size organization ($400 million plus).
  • Problem Solving: ability to perform root cause and countermeasure analysis to find practical solutions to problems.
  • Collaboration: works well with internal and external parties, such as banks, outside vendors, business, and staff.
  • Communication: ability to communicate clearly across multiple channels of communication (verbal, email, Microsoft tools, presentations).
  • Analytical Skills: ability to structure and process qualitative and quantitative data and draw insightful conclusions from it; exhibit a probing mind and achieve penetrating insights.
  • Engagement: actively strives to build strong partnership with business leaders.
  • Motivation: self-starter and strong desire to achieve results; passionate about quality, results, and progress.
  • Pace: ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports to the Controller.
  • Oversees a team of eight, with two direct reports.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature.
  • No heavy lifting required.
  • Minimal travel as necessary.
