This position is responsible for providing leadership and direction for student-focused community service and civic initiatives which complement learning and encourage individual and collective commitment to community awareness, service with and for others, diversity and inclusion, and social justice. Specific responsibilities include day-to-day oversight of the Center of Community Service, supervision of multiple professional, graduate and student staff, advising student service organizations, planning campus-wide service events, service integration into orientation events, leading an annual student social justice conference, and working with campus partners on civic learning, voter engagement and dialogue-based work. Additionally, the Director serves as part of a team with other student affairs professionals and the Assistant Dean of Community Service to further integrate the University mission, especially as it relates to our service pillar, into the work of student affairs departments and units. The Director is expected to undertake all responsibilities in a manner that reflects the Catholic, Jesuit mission of the University as well as the principles of student development theory.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide overall leadership for and direction to community service and civic learning initiatives.
a. Promote the mission of the university through service and community engagement in Student Affairs with the approach of collaboration at the forefront.
b. Develops strategies for accomplishing goals of the center and problem solves with student, community and University needs in mind.
c. Manage the operations, budgets, and programs of the Center for Community Service.
d. Supervise professional staff, including the manager for food recovery and assistance, the AmeriCorps 414 Fellows program, and the coordinator of community service. Cultivates an innovative space, mindful of best practices and supportive environment.
e. Recruit, select, train, and supervise the Graduate Assistant for Community Service and student program assistants and volunteers.
f. Build and maintain relationships with Milwaukee nonprofits, schools, and community-based organizations to develop reciprocal partnerships that support student learning and positive community change.
g. Build and maintain relationships with community engagement partners on campus, including Service Learning, Campus Ministry, Office of Community Engagement, Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, and many additional community engaged faculty and staff.
2. Support students in connecting them with service and civic learning opportunities on and off campus.
a. Develop and implement local service programs, including one-day and on-going service opportunities for students. These experiences require advising student leaders, training and supporting volunteers, working closely with community partners, and incorporating reflection to ensure a meaningful volunteer experience. Specific examples include service and community programming held during New Student Orientation, Make a Difference Day, Marquette Homecoming festivities, Marquette Volunteer Corps, Earth Day and Marquette Community Day of Service.
b. Maintains awareness of current literature to ensure maximum educational impact on students and community.
c. Connect students with service opportunities through bi-annual volunteer fairs and through disseminating information about Milwaukee volunteer needs and post-graduate service opportunities.
d. Utilize student affairs and community engagement databases to maintain service sites, volunteer hours and other assessment-based information.
e. Lead the annual campus-wide Justice in Action student conference, involving hundreds of students and over 15 campus partners.
f. Provide training, advisement, and support for student community service organizations.
g. Oversee community service transportation program, including supervision of a fleet of vans.
h. Work with Student Development staff to administer university policies and procedures for service groups regarding fund raising, risk management, event planning, organization advising, and domestic and international service travel.
i. In conjunction with the Director of the Burke Scholarship Program, assist with the selection, orientation, and placement of Burke Scholars.
j. In conjunction with other offices and departments across campus, lead civic and voter engagement efforts for students.
k. In conjunction with other campus partners, support the implementation of a campus-wide dialogue program, such as Narrative4 and other dialogue-based initiatives to improve campus climate and belonging for all students.
3. Undertake additional responsibilities in conjunction with Student Affairs responsibilities, including:
a. Participate in Division of Student Affairs committees, activities, and programs.
b. Assist in the design and implementation of student assessments and program evaluations to meet goals of the division and the University’s strategic plan.
c. Be a resource for other campus offices and departments in matching volunteer needs with community organizations.
d. Involvement with university conduct process, supporting restorative justice, community learning outcomes and community service placements.
e. With the other members of the staff team and student leaders, design and implement peer education, leadership development, intercultural education, and new student orientation programs.
4. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Master’s degree in Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, Public Service or related field.
A minimum of 3 years of full-time professional experience in higher education service/community engagement programs, non-profit program/volunteer management or in a student affair setting required.
Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong independent decision-making skills and can work with little or no daily supervision.
Commitment to, knowledge of, and experience with intercultural education, community service programming, leadership development, and social justice.
Experience in interacting with and supporting the efforts of community agencies and campus-community partnerships.

Availability to work some nights and weekends when needed to ensure a quality student experience is an expectation for the position.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
4-5 years of professional experience in higher education service/community engagement programs, nonprofit program/volunteer management or in a student affairs setting preferred.
Knowledge of the Milwaukee community (or similar urban community) and nonprofit organizations.
Experience in facilitation, collective impact, emergent strategy and civic development.
Experience with volunteer management systems and/or database management.
Experience working with grant funded programs, including AmeriCorps.
Event planning/coordination experience.
