SCOPE OF ROLE:

This role requires a commitment to working with a high performing team developing long-term strategies, completing important applied research, and developing forest modeling systems. You will direct the research efforts of the forest biometrics team in collaboration with the Research, Productivity and Sustainability team. You will engage with the biometrics team on the development of forest models using the results of internal and external research. You must have a passion for forest modeling and a desire to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to advance the science of forest biometrics. The analysis, models and decision support tools you provide in collaboration with other teams are foundational to our business success and have a significant impact on key decisions we make including sustainable yields, harvesting scheduling, silviculture treatments, long-range planning, land sales and acquisitions.

HOW YOU WILL SUCCEED:

  • Develop long term strategies that support Rayonier’s overall corporate mission
  • Act as a coach and mentor striving to maximize team engagement, collaboration, continuous learning, and performance
  • Build meaningful relationships and partnerships with our land information services, operational forestry, and research teams
  • Seek to understand our business, and collaborate with the biometrics team to design and develop decision support tools that provide key data and analysis to our internal business departments
  • Gain a high degree of user acceptance of proprietary growth models by continuously interacting with operational forestry team and soliciting feedback that can be used to improve prediction reliability
  • Take ownership and stay up to date on emerging technologies and evaluate their potential value to our business
  • Collaborate with others and share your viewpoints, ideas and findings to create better outcomes for Rayonier, our customers and communities
  • Commit to continuous learning, finding new and more innovative ways of doing things, and learning

WHAT IS REQUIRED:

  • Master’s degree in forestry or forest biometrics, or bachelor’s degree in related field with at least five (5) years practical forestry experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading a high performing team of technical experts
  • Minimum of ten (10) years in forest biometrics, inventory analysis, acquisition analysis and/or harvest scheduling
  • Extensive knowledge of forest inventory design, forest sampling and mensuration techniques and forest growth and yield modeling
  • Demonstrated competency using statistical packages such as SAS or R
  • Excellent project management skills
