General Responsibilities
The director of admissions is responsible for providing leadership and expertise in executing a data-driven strategy for all college admissions activities. This position provides leadership of a team that is charged with creating a positive, personal connection while guiding students through the admissions process using a holistic approach by connecting students to resources including and not limited to academic advising, registration, placement testing, financial aid, scholarships, and other payment options, and orientation to ensure students are set up for success. The director develops and maintains strong relationships with internal and external partners.

Work Performed
  • Provides strategic leadership in advancing HCC’s enrollment goals.
  • Establishes goals to convert applicants to enrolled students and provides progress reports.
  • Leads strategic planning, budget, and assessment for the department.
  • Administers staff training programs related to converting a diverse pool of applicants to enrolled students and provides training to student ambassadors.
  • Supervises assistant director and assists in hiring admissions coaches and support staff.
  • Serves on committees as requested.
  • Employs technology and strategies to help students navigate through the enrollment and registration process.
  • Manages and provides first course selection and other support as needed to start the first semester.
  • Manages and provides guidance and support through the enrollment process assisting students as needed with the submission of required documentation and completion of registration activities.
  • Ensures students have a plan to pay by assisting with the financial aid and scholarship application process.
  • Contacts assigned roster of admitted students to set up initial and follow-up appointments
  • Tracks and monitors student enrollment progress.
  • Follows communication plan to keep student momentum moving, assisting students as needed to overcome enrollment obstacles.
  • Clearly communicates enrollment requirements and refers to campus resources as needed to ensure student success.
  • Cultivates connections with students to keep them engaged in the process.
  • Develops and conduct programs and workshops to assist students and parents through the enrollment process. These programs require significant collaboration with other departments and offices across campus.
  • Provides on-going quality communication, effective customer service, and support to applicants by using consistent, effective outreach and follow-up contacts including in-person activities, phone calls, and digital communication; documents and tracks contact data into computer systems ensuring compliance with any regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains and updates records and files on admissions activities along with collected student information using the college’s client relationship management system and student information system; creates and submits reports.
  • Works with personal interest students to navigate registration and educating students on tools and resources.
  • Other duties as assigned related to navigating the enrollment process.

  • Prior supervisory, planning, and budgetary experience.
  • Demonstrated organizational and managerial skills.
  • Ability to meet complex goals and collaborate with various departments on key initiatives
  • Knowledge of college admission, financial aid processes, and community outreach
  • Competency in planning and delivering enthusiastic presentations via electronic media including webinars/webcasts.
  • Competency in organizing data and preparing reports.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to communicate with applicants via social media modalities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; confidence speaking in small/large groups and with people from diverse backgrounds; and ability to quickly establish rapport and engage prospective students.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work/travel independently and set priorities to achieve goals/objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a cooperative team-focused work environment.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information and materials while abiding by state and federal privacy laws including FERPA.

Working Conditions
Work extended hours during peak periods. Substantial evening and weekend work. Extensive follow-up work, database use, responding to inquiries, meetings, etc. Ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Flexibility required.

Benefits Summary
Howard Community College offers competitive salaries, excellent medical and dental selections, tuition reimbursement and paid leave programs. As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor’s degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor’s degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor’s degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.

HCC is interested in all qualified applicants who are eligible to work in the United States. However, HCC will generally not sponsor applicants for work visas. Due to HCC policy, only employees living in states contiguous to Maryland are eligible for work at HCC and include Virginia, West Virginia, Washington DC, Pennsylvania. Candidates must live in the commutable area or willing to relocate at their own expense if offered the position because HCC does not offer relocation benefits.
