Director of Men and Women's Tennis

Leads competitive NCAA Division I men’s and women’s Tennis programs by recruiting
and developing qualified student-athletes, hiring and supervising seasonal assistant
coaches and volunteer assistant coaches, and organizing practice and competition
schedules.


The Director of Tennis must conduct the programs in a manner that recognizes the
primacy of academics by recruiting, supporting, and retaining student-athletes who will
uphold Holy Cross' high academic tradition and be competitive in the Patriot League.
The Director of Tennis must ensure that the programs operate in compliance with all
College, Patriot League and NCAA rules and regulations and that the men’s and
women’s programs are treated equitably in terms of personal access and practice and
competition coaching time, access to facilities, and quality of travel and competition.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Provides leadership to the programs that achieves consistent academic and athletic success on a consistent basis. Director of Tennis monitors academic progress; develops training programs that are safe and effective for student-athletes; schedules games and practices in accordance with College policies; oversees selection of team equipment and apparel; coordinates performance analysis and lineup selection; develops contest strategies; completes reports; and maintains records as required.
  • Coordinates travel arrangements for practice and competition, including securing indoor practice times as needed during the winter months.
  • Schedules, organizes, and conducts annual mixed tournament. Director of Tennis will work with sport supervisor and course officials to reserve the course on the scheduled dates, invite equal number of opposing teams for men and women, coordinate logistics and staffing, design the format of the tournament, plan receptions and meals, and promote the tournament to alumni, donors, host club members, and media.
  • Coordinates recruitment of student-athletes. Director of Tennis identifies talented, academically qualified prospective student-athletes; effectively communicates with high school coaches, prospects and parents; and supports key applicants within admissions and financial aid offices. Director of Tennis delegates recruiting duties to assistant coaches as needed.
  • Provides leadership to program. Actively engages with student-athletes and staff to develop and reinforce a positive culture based upon proactive communication and mutual respect. Maintains an environment that reflects the department’s commitment to excellence, integrity, respect and leadership. Hires and manages assistant coaches whose actions additionally reflect these values. Collaborates with sport administrator and/or Director of Athletics to develop annual goals for program. Communicates program’s needs and concerns responsibly and in timely manner. Attends workshops, training sessions and meetings required for head coaches by the College and the conference.
  • Develops training programs that are safe and effective for student-athletes; communicates with athletic training staff as well as strength and conditioning staff members regarding best practices, training methods as well as injury recovery. Must have a commitment to mental health and wellness and active engagement with the coordinator of student-athlete counseling services and programming.
  • Responsible for administration of all phases of the program, including monitoring team budget, completing expense reports, and conducting sports clinics.
  • Participates in marketing and fundraising initiatives. Engages in special events to generate interest within the College community, alumni, and region. Delegates fundraising and community service responsibilities to assistant coaches as needed.
  • Oversees operational activities of assistant coaches and prepares annual evaluations for direct reports. Provides support, opportunity, and adequate autonomy to assistant coaches to make decisions, to learn, and to grow as coaches.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by sport supervisor and/or Director of Athletics.

Minimum Qualification:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Coaching experience required, preferably at the collegiate level or instructing
  • elite individuals in a club or professional setting. Division I coaching experience
  • or certified professionals strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division I rules and regulations required.
  • NCAA playing experience preferred.
  • Experience recruiting or working with high school athletes preferred.
  • Management or team building experience preferred.
  • A network of relationships with regional Tennis contacts preferred.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills required.
  • Proficient computer skills strongly preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
