EcoRep Undergraduate Leader

About the Department/Unit

The Office of Sustainability is responsible for implementing the university's sustainability plan by advancing and expanding sustainability initiatives across campus.

Summary/Objective

EcoRep Leaders are part-time, paid student interns in the Office of Sustainability, hired to support the EcoRep Program. The EcoRep Program provides undergraduate students with opportunities to gain leadership and outreach skills while engaging the AU community in learning about and taking action for sustainability. EcoRep Leaders will work with Office of Sustainability staff to oversee this volunteer program, including:
  • Assisting with strategic planning for the program including attending planning meetings.
  • Monitoring volunteer sign-ups for events.
  • Coordinating and staffing outreach events (setting up tables and displays, making sure volunteers arrive on time, organizing materials in advance, etc.).
  • Modeling positive leadership and effective outreach skills.
  • Assisting with creating communications content to promote the program and events.
  • Disseminating information to EcoReps via GroupMe, email, or in-person conversations.
EcoRep Leaders will work approximately 10 hours per week. As paid employees, unexcused absences are considered grounds for termination. This position will begin in August 2023 and last the duration of the academic year, with the potential opportunity for continuation.

Work Environment

  • Student interns will work both at events around campus and in the office.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • EcoRep Leaders will work approximately 10 hours per week.

Salary Range

  • $17.50/hour.

Required Education and Experience

  • Current American University undergraduate student.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Outgoing personality and willingness to serve as a leader.
  • Passion for social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
  • A self-starter able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Demonstrated record of reliability.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
  • An open mind and a willingness to express new ideas.
