Internship Title: Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)

The Elevator Pitch

Do you want to work hands-on with cutting-edge technologies while helping to ensure the reliability and scalability of a modern, serverless infrastructure? Are you eager to enhance your skills in AWS, Terraform, Python, and CI/CD tools?

In this 10-week Site Reliability Engineer Intern role, you will join a dynamic and distributed team that designs, builds, and maintains robust and automated solutions for our serverless architecture. You'll gain critical experience in infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, and performance optimization, while collaborating with a supportive team of experts.

This internship is a 10-week program: June 10th – August 16th

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes you will work toward completing?

In the first 5 weeks, you will:

  • Gain familiarity with AWS, CICD, Terraform and how it is used to manage our infrastructure as code environment.
  • Understand the fundamentals of our serverless architecture, leveraging AWS Lambda and S3.
  • Develop proficiency in our CI/CD pipeline tools, including Terraform, CircleCI, and Bitbucket.
  • Participate in the deployment and monitoring of production services, learning how to ensure high availability and reliability.
  • Successfully deploy a small-scale Lambda function using Terraform and integrate it into our CI/CD pipeline.

In the last 5 weeks, you will:

  • Build an automated monitoring or alerting solution using AWS CloudWatch and Python.
  • Create Terraform modules to optimize infrastructure reusability and scalability.
  • Contribute to reducing tech debt by improving our existing serverless infrastructure or CI/CD workflows.
  • Deliver a final presentation of a project showcasing your contributions and learning outcomes.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Technical Development

  • Learn to provision and manage AWS resources using Terraform.
  • Write Python scripts to automate repetitive tasks and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Design, implement, and test Lambda functions integrated with various AWS services.
  • Ensure code quality and collaboration through Bitbucket and CircleCI workflows.

Infrastructure Monitoring and Reliability

  • Set up dashboards in AWS CloudWatch to monitor application performance.
  • Troubleshoot serverless application errors and implement fixes in collaboration with the team.
  • Learn and apply best practices for security, cost optimization, and scalability in a serverless environment.

Team Engagement and Collaboration

  • Attend team stand-ups and meetings to align on goals and progress.
  • Partner with team members to solve real-world challenges and support production systems.
  • Develop a strong understanding of team dynamics and foster relationships across the organization.

Problem Solving and Innovation

  • Explore new tools or methodologies to enhance infrastructure and operational processes.
  • Work on a capstone project that addresses a key challenge or improves a critical workflow.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team?

You will be joining the Cloud Software engineering team and reporting to our Director of Cloud Software. You will be working with the Cloud Architecture team that works across multiple engineering and product teams.

Where is the role located?

The location of this role is based in Waltham, MA with some flexibility in being remote some days.  We require our interns to be onsite at a minimum, 3 days of the work week. We do not provide relocation assistance at this time.

What is the pay range?

The hourly pay range for this internship position is $20-$27 an hour. Our pay ranges are determined by your current level of education.
