Job Title: Farm Improvement Worker

General Description:

Performs activities relative to the day-to-day operations of the Chickasaw Farms

Supervision Received: Work is performed under the supervision of the Sod and/or Agriculture Supervisor

Supervision Exercised: None

Supervision Essential Job Functions:

  • Will perform duties as assigned by the sod/agricultural supervisor that will result in a well operated farm that will produce healthy, viable products for distribution to Chickasaw citizens.
  • Will be expected to learn the operation of the big roll sod harvester and small roll harvester, from the ground aspect as well as at the controls of the harvester.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the operation of a tractor, including use of a front end loader, forklift, donkey as well as 3-point and PTO operated implements. These implements, used in the sod operation and farming aspect, will include the 22 foot sod mower, 8 wheel hay rake, culti-packer, trifold harrow, 10’ brush hog and boom buster sprayer.
  • Operates assigned equipment per instructions and approved safety practices. Must be experienced in the operation of a chainsaw, weed eater, Z-track mower, air compressor, power washer, grinder and other miscellaneous power tools.
  • Will be expected to assist in the welding fabrication of projects, repair and replace broken water lines and assist wherever needed in the mowing and maintenance of the Farm.
  • Will be expected to be able to service all tractors and vehicles at the Farm, to include oil and filter changes and topping off fluid levels.
  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks concerned with general sod harvesting and installation, maintaining plants, grounds maintenance, etc.
  • Must maintain Farm property in a manner that is acceptable by the Chickasaw Nation.
  • Responsible for landscaping and grounds maintenance.
  • Preventive maintenance on equipment to avoid damage caused by climatic conditions.
  • Operates, maintains and make repairs or adjustments to all types of farm equipment.
  • Performs emergency snow and ice removal work as required.
  • Prepare assigned reports per instructions.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preferred - Desire to produce quality landscaping products for Chickasaw citizens. Maintain the grounds at the Farm, so as to project a positive image upon the Chickasaw Nation. Must possess the knowledge, skill and ability to operate heavy equipment such as tractors, one ton trucks, forklift, backhoe, skid steer, sod harvesting equipment, sod installation equipment (track steer and self-propelled installer), sprig digger and sprigger, and the attachments, such as the 22 foot progressive sod mower, root grapple, bucket loader, water nurse wagon, 10 foot brush hog. Must have common knowledge in the use of light equipment such as z-track mowers and light duty tractors with loaders and brush hogs. Must possess the knowledge, skill and ability to operate hand implements such as chainsaws, gas and electric power tools, machete, shovels, etc. Must know proper care of all tools and equipment. Must be physically capable to fulfill the rugged tasks. Must have knowledge of pruning and trimming shrubs and trees, as needed. Have knowledge of maintaining a high quality landscape appearance around the office and barns, or elsewhere as needed. Must be able to provide minor maintenance on mowers, weed eaters, mowing equipment, disk, sod mowing machine, culti-packer, and other farm equipment. Must be able to provide service to all Farm trucks, tractors and engine driven equipment, including oil and filter changes, fuel and hydraulic filter changes, cleaning and replacing air filters. Must be able to drive a truck, load and unload equipment and sod on trailer. All work is in outdoor weather conditions, consisting of rain and humid conditions, extreme heat and cold temperatures. Will be exposed to moving mechanical parts, and vibration, while operating Farm equipment on a daily basis. Will be exposed to loud noises while operating farm equipment from 1 - 8 hours per day. May be exposed to very loud noise (95 dba) for short periods of time (appropriate hearing protection will be provided). Must have the ability to understand, follow oral and written instructions and deal effectively with the public. Perform assigned tasks independently, with a minimum of supervision.

Education:

GED Required - High School Diploma or equivalent.

Training And Experience:

Preferred Experience (6 months - 3 years) - Three (3) years landscaping or related field experience.

Licenses, Certifications, Other:

Required - Must have a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and be insurable by the Chickasaw Nation

Physical Requirements:

Required - The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate a motor vehicle and frequently required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position is an outside position and as such, employee will be exposed to elements of the weather, rain, and extreme hot and cold, in executing the job duties and responsibilities of this job.
