The Forensics Coach assists the director with coaching and tournament arrangement and travel for at least two forensics teams in the program (policy debate, mock trial, ethics/bioethics bowl, moot court). Provides feedback and assistance with student research, argument formation, competitive strategy and speech delivery at practices and competitions. Creates an environment conducive to the learning and development of forensics students and manages squad dynamics including partnerships and team arrangements. Assists the Director with recruitment, on-campus forensics support, and alumni engagement. Includes fiscal management of specific tournament budgets.
This role will work approximately 30 hours a week through the academic year (September through May). Frequent weekend travel to tournaments is required.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individual and group instruction for tournament competition by guiding student research, observing them in practice, and offering written and oral critiques of their efforts.
- Serve as the assistant coach for at least two of the following forensics teams: policy debate, mock trial, moot court, and Ethics Bowl competitions.
- Assist with the logistics of safely transporting students to and from various tournaments and supervising student conduct at tournaments in alignment with Macalester College policies.
- Assist with hosting on-campus tournaments, including registration, room reservations and judge recruitment.
- Co-design recruitment/outreach programs to attract new Forensics team members.
- Manage a Purchase Card, including monthly receipt reporting.
- Serve as a member of the Division of Student Affairs within the Center of Student Leadership and Engagement. Participate in staff development as retreats as available. Other duties assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degee in Communication Studies, Political Science, Philosophy or related field; Master's degree preferred.
- 1+ years of experience with coaching collegiate forensics including logistics assistance, curriculum development, and public speaking/argumentation training.
- Specialized knowledge in forensics public speaking training and argument production, including collegiate policy debate research, ethics bowl philosophy, and mock trial case theory.
- Ability to problem solve. Ability to manage multiple tasks of varying priority on a regular basis. Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task without sacrificing accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to take initiative, work independently and perform job duties without direct supervision.
- Proficiency in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Chat, Gmail, Calendar) and Microsoft Word.
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Compensation:
This is a non-exempt position and the hourly pay rate is $22.50 to $25.00, depending on experience.
