Controller
HighPoint’s professionals focus on helping government agencies and companies implement their most critically strategic initiatives. The role of Controller contributes to HighPoint by leading the accounting department, managing the company’s financial records, overseeing financial/tax audits and monthly/year-end close processes, and serving as a key financial advisor to other departments to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), and accounting company policies
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
General Accounting:
- Lead month-end and year-end closing activities, including journal entry posting, balance sheet reconciliations, and bank reconciliation; validate proper revenue and expenditure recognition at month-end.
- Lead the accounting team, including hiring, developing, and mentoring staff; providing performance feedback; and managing day-to-day department responsibilities.
- Apply principles of accounting to analyze financial information, record transactions, and prepare financial reports.
- Provide guidance on and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), and company practices and policies.
- Analyze financial statements and investigate and report on variances.
- Lead preparations for annual audits and other corporate reporting requirements.
- Take responsibility for the adherence to and communication of accounting and auditing policies and procedures.
- Maintain billing, collection, and reporting activities according to specific procedures and deadlines, including the generation of AR reports and allocation of payments.
- Review the effectiveness of internal system and policy controls and develop new controls and policies to ensure compliance with GAAP, FAR, and other applicable regulations.
- Manage relationships with and support key vendors, including the outside accounting and auditing firm and other specialized accounting consultants.
- Work with the accounting firm to prepare and file federal, state, and local tax returns and credits and ensure proper recording and filing of other taxes.
Financial Management:
- Serve as a key advisor on the Deltek Costpoint ERP.
- Lead development of indirect rate pools and the annual incurred cost submission, ensuring compliance with the FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulations) and CAS (Cost Accounting Standards), and act as the primary liaison for government audit support.
- Analyze financial information to determine present and future financial performance. Identify trends and recommend improvements accordingly.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure proper accounting for project setup and revenue.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Experience maintaining a general ledger, structuring and reconciling accounts, and preparing statements
- Proven ability to manage schedules and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, including a high degree of proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, lookups)
- High degree of proficiency working with Deltek Costpoint in a professional services firm.
- Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals and of accounting standards including GAAP and relevant FASB standards, as well as state, county, and city revenue and other reporting requirements in various jurisdictions.
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills exhibiting professionalism and diplomacy.
- Effective time management skills, ability to work well under pressure, self-motivation, and high attention to detail.
EDUCATION AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related field.
- Active CPA license strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with a government contractor, with 5 years in a lead role.
