Maintenance and Operations Worker

Introduction

The Prince William County Public Works, Solid Waste Division is seeking to hire a full-time Maintenance and Operations Worker. This employee will be assigned to either the County Landfill or Balls Ford Road Compost Facility in Manassas, Virginia. No work experience is required for this position. ABOUT THIS ROLE:

The Maintenance and Operations Worker is part of a team of employees responsible for maintaining County facilities and roadways. This position may work at the County Landfill, Balls Ford Road Compost Facility, and/or along County roadways removing trash, litter, and other debris, as well as performing general grounds and equipment maintenance. Other routine job duties include staffing and maintaining the customer convenience center and answering customer questions.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of an 8th grade education and ability to read and write standard English at an 8th-grade level is required.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license is required.
  • Successfully completing and passing a pre-employment physical is required.
  • Experience working outdoors performing maintenance, construction, landscaping, or other manual tasks is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to routinely perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely and properly operate hand tools, power tools, small equipment, and vehicles.
  • Ability to engage customers and coworkers in a respectful and courteous manner at all times including ability to maintain composure and tact when faced with difficult people or situations.
  • Ability to follow direction, complete tasks within specified timeframes, adapt well to change, and work effectively as part of a team.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position is considered to be an essential, on-call employee that is required to provide support during inclement weather and emergency-related events. This job is a safety-sensitive position that requires wearing personal protective equipment at all times while at work.

Passing a physical exam that demonstrates the ability to perform the required job duties is a condition of employment for this position. The job requires having and maintaining a valid Virginia driver’s license and is subject to routine driving record checks.

The job requires the willingness and ability to work primarily outdoors in an environment that may include exposure to noise, dust, odors, moving vehicles and heavy equipment, inclement weather, insects, plants, and animals. The ability to walk long distances, three or more miles per day, over rough terrain is required. This job is physically demanding and requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The job also requires manual dexterity, standing, bending, climbing, crouching, grasping, kneeling, balancing, pulling, pushing, reaching, and lifting up to 80 pounds. The work may require repetitive motion and prolonged crouching, standing, or walking.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:

Work schedules vary and are determined based on coverage of landfill and compost facility operating hours, which are currently seven days per week, 361 days per year. Employees are eligible for overtime and holiday pay. Working overtime, as well as some holidays and weekends may be required depending on assigned shift, staffing levels, and workload.

ENTRY SALARY RANGE:

$18.94 - $24.27
