M&J is seeking a full-time Construction Inspector for Building / Vertical Construction opportunities within our Construction Management Division. Positions are open for projects within Connecticut and Southern New England.Location: Based in our Hamden, Connecticut Office.
Inspection and approval all contractor building and related sitework to ensure conformance with contract documents and quality standards of contract; informing of substandard conformance of work and ensuring remedial action is taken. This Construction Inspector (Buildings) requires the ability to analyze and evaluate constructability issues and provide effective solutions. This important role will entail:• Preparation of daily inspection reports documenting all project work activities and events. Preparation of construction records and administrative reports. • Conducting and participating in project meetings, resolution of issues, preparing meeting minutes, and follow up of action items.• Verification and approval of contractor submitted materials, components, and methods, ensuring minimum material testing requirements are met. Obtaining samples of materials for laboratory testing as needed.• Verification of quantities of materials to be used.• Review of plans and specifications and assistance in their interpretation for contractors. • Examining materials for conformity to contract plans and specifications and recommending changes and expediting their processing. Negotiating extra work items. • Assisting in the coordination of contractors and subcontractors with the overall building project schedule.• Coordinating inspections by local, state, and federal authorities. • Performing field measurements and reviewing accuracy of contractor payment requisitions and withholding payments as necessary. • Collaborating with the public, property, and business owners, when required, to address issues and concerns resulting from construction activities.• Performing related duties as required.
CCM Certification or Building Official / Assistant Building Official certification, or obtainable within (6) months of employment. Considerable knowledge of building and site systems, building and fire-safety codes, the ADA, sustainability, and planning and zoning regulations. Knowledge and experience with construction contracts including specifications, plans, special provisions, and related documents, and familiar with construction cost estimates, scheduling, manpower requirements, and budget controls. Knowledge, skill, and ability include: • Considerable ability to inspect and supervise construction work and layout of building service equipment.• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in large commercial building construction including installation of building service equipment. • Principles and practices of structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design and construction and other related construction trades. • Considerable ability to read and interpret building contract plans and specifications and inspect construction work for conformance with contract. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. • Proper Interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Five (5) years of experience with construction projects involving the major building trades (e.g., site, structural, architectural, plumbing, HVAC, electrical).• Familiarity with CTDOT Form 819 (1.20) and the CTDOT Construction Manual.• Work experience utilizing using AASHTOWare and COMPASS for construction management and document control.
Special Requirements:• Must be willing to travel in lower New England.• A valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license is required.• Must be able to work during off-hours and weekends when necessary.
Physical Requirements:• May be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from construction site environments and some discomfort from year-round weather conditions. Inspection requires climbing and entering excavations, walking on irregular surfaces, use of a ladder, and exposure to varying heights.• A routine ability to drive a motor vehicle to project sites, and an ability to remain stationary for periods at a time.
