Rethink your impact!
Are you passionate about mass spectrometry & microbial metabolomics? Then you might be our new
Scientist in Microbe Analytics & Automation.
Work for a cause, not just a company
Novozymes is the world’s leading provider of industrial enzymes and microorganisms. Together with our customers, partners, and the global community, we use our innovative thinking and passion for science to boost industries and make everyday products more sustainable for the good of the planet. Our biological solutions enable higher agricultural yields, healthy food consumption, low-temperature washing, energy-efficient production, renewable fuel, and many other biological solutions that the world can benefit from – both today and in years to come. We need people who are eager to try new things, motivated by challenge, and not afraid to fail but driven to try again- and again. We know that original thinking happens when we’re given the flexibility to focus and the freedom to fully unfold our individual strengths. This is key to our innovation power. We call it Rethink Tomorrow.
Join us as our new Mass Spectrometry & Microbial Metabolomics Scientist
As Scientist, you will work on a cross-disciplinary team of experts in strain engineering, fermentation, data science, and biochemistry. This position will join the Microbe Analytics & Automation team, where we deploy technologies for building, testing & understanding the performance and health of our microbes at high, medium, and low throughputs. You will draw on expertise in analytical chemistry to develop and execute methods for evaluating the performance and phenotype of wild-type and genetically modified microbes as well as interpret targeted and untargeted metabolomic datasets to understand key features and differences in microbial strains.
Welcome to Microbe Research, California
In Microbe Research, California we use classical industrial microorganisms and engineer new strains to bring Biological Solutions to our customers' toughest problems in biofuels, alternative protein ingredients
,
and beyond. We are connected to other global Microbe Research sites in Germany, Denmark, and the US and work with Novozymes R&D sites around the globe.
In this role you’ll make an impact by:-
Implementing, executing, and developing analytical chemistry methods for a range of projects that let us identify promising new microbes with desirable phenotypes, and characterizing lead microbes in additional detail.
- Joining forces with microbial physiologists, bioinformaticians, proteomics, and genomics scientists to conduct and interpret multi-omics experiments and sharing them with the local and global Novozymes community.
-
Maintaining and troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation including LC-QTOF, LC-QQQ, HPLC/UPLC, GC-FID, GC-MS.
- Writing & scripting methods for processing and analysis of analytical and metabolomics datasets and using Benchling to capture and track lab processes and experimental data.
-
Ensuring timely delivery of results to internal or external customers
To succeed in this position, you must have:
- Experience with successful analytical chemistry & metabolomics method development (targeted and untargeted methods), validation, and implementation. Prior experience preparing and analyzing samples from bacteria, yeast, or fungal samples is advantageous.
-
Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting analytical chemistry instrumentation including LC-MS, GC-MS. Experience with Agilent hardware and software such as MassHunter, Chemstation, Mass Profiler Professional (MPP), and Progenesis is most applicable.
- Prior experience interpreting metabolomics datasets to understand microbial physiology, both as standalone datasets and in combination with multiple omics datasets (e.g. genomics, proteomics, lipidomics).
-
Demonstrated proficiency utilizing existing scripts and processes and writing new methods for data capture, processing, and analysis of large datasets with statistical best practices (using Python, Jupyter notebooks, R, JMP or other).
-
A degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or related field with prior industrial or postdoctoral experience. PhD with 0-3 years industrial experience is considered Scientist 1. Equivalent degree & experience combinations are welcome. More experienced candidates are welcome and may be hired at Sr. Scientist. Position will be hired at a level based on degree & experience.
-
Ability to travel within the US and internationally, approximately 5%.
-
The ability to work in the US without sponsorship, now or in the future.
Candidates with the following experience are especially preferred:-
Experience applying targeted and untargeted metabolomics methods to microbiome analysis, food / flavor / odor chemistry, plant-microbe interactions, or protein / enzyme characterization
-
Knowledge of metabolomic and multi-omic data flows and statistical best practices
-
Successful examples of writing your own scripts for data capture, processing & analysis (Python, R or other language).
-
Familiarity & practical work with microbiology and molecular biology methods used to engineer bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi
-
Previous experience using & developing processes in Benchling
Location:
This job will be located at our site in Davis, CA. This is primarily an on-site role, with some flexibility to work from home when lab work is not needed.
