Materials Characterization Manager

This position is based in the US and required to be in compliance with ITAR regulations.

Materials characterization is pivotal in all R&D and production deliverables for the company and as the leader of the team you will need to be a hands-on problem solver that mentors and develops the team members.

You will Interact with scientists and engineers creating the next-gen carbon nano-materials. To be successful in this role, you will need to understand the dynamics of the company's development process and use that knowledge to best prioritize workflow in an environment with competing priorities. It is critical that data collection and analysis is accurate by ensuring all tools are functioning and calibrated. A deep understanding of the tools operation and data analysis is essential. This leader needs to be very proactive, organized, adept at working in a matrixed organization and has a track record of successful supervisory experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain and keep records for variety of analytical instruments, metrology tools, and laboratory equipment used for characterization of advanced materials to ensure consistent and reliable data.
  • Supervise team, organize workflow, and manage day to day activities.
  • Establish and/or refine SOPs for data collection and analysis.
  • Analyze data and expand current understanding of materials properties.
  • Use commercial software for data processing and statistical analysis.
  • Streamline data analysis and improve methods to enhance and expedite learnings with coding, scripting, or comparable skills.
  • Manage database ensuring batch records and corresponding characterization data are complete.
  • Communicate timelines for publication of data and/or any delays that may occur because of hardware or other issues.
  • Work on a cross disciplinary team with an open mind to new ideas in a fast-paced startup company.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform advanced scientific problem solving.
  • Generate reports and effectively communicate results and conclusions to team members and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD or MS degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or a closely related field. Ten years industry experience or equivalent.
  • Proven track record in materials science with expertise in materials characterization, process engineering, and data analysis.
  • Extensive experience using analytical instruments providing optical, physical, chemical, and structural details about materials properties.
  • Extensive experience analyzing data to extract relevant information, identify trends, and determine process-property correlations.
  • Strong organizational skills to streamline team activities, maximize productivity, and manage data files.
  • Excellent analytical, statistical, and programming skills to collect, analyze, and interpret materials, processes and characterization data.
  • Experience querying databases and using scientific graphing and data analysis software for data fitting and statistical analysis.
  • Experience compiling data sets, generating correlations, and presenting data/results to key stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success working independently and collaborating on cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated success leading and managing technicians.
  • Strong multitasking and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities in a face paced deadline driven environment.
  • Carbon allotrope knowledge and exposure to manufacturing environment is nice to have.
