As the Materials Scientist, you will be responsible for identifying and recommending materials-based solutions for our various product lines. Working with external suppliers, manufacturers and our internal test team, you will create opportunities for Otter Products to continue to innovate. Taking design requirements and identified challenges and turning them into materials focused initiatives will be asked of you in this role.   • Predict and analyze materials related megatrends such as sustainability laws, materials advances, and supply chain challenges
  • Interpret technical and non-technical marketing, product, supply chain, engineering, and design requirements in order to propose materials initiatives and define materials specifications
  • Identify and recommend potential materials, compounds, or processing for reliability, performance, cost, and sustainability
  • Deliver innovative materials-based solutions for polymers, compounds, metals, textiles, adhesives, and more
  • Develop patents, trade secrets, and other intellectual property that provide a strategic business advantage
  • Direct materials suppliers and manufacturers to develop materials solutions, design and perform experiments, establish new procedures, reduce cost, and improve material processes and yield
  • Interact with materials suppliers to solve materials challenges and identify new opportunities in materials using scientific knowledge and skills
  • Visit materials suppliers and manufacturers to understand capabilities, solve problems, provide expertise, and support new development
  • Work with Supply Chain and Quality teams to identify and select new vendors and ensure the vendors meet industry standards for materials processing
  • Collaborate with engineering validation team on failure analysis and root cause investigation using analytical techniques
  • Use statistical tools and materials characterization techniques to perform experiments and analyze data
  • Work with Simulation and Validation teams to model and study structural, natural, physical, and chemical properties of materials as well as responses to applied forces
  • Guide, mentor, and teach Engineering and Design teams on materials issues, challenges, and solutions
  • Prepare and present reports, proposals, test results, instruction, and libraries for technical peers as well as senior leadership
  • Support and maintain a positive safety culture by being an active leader in all safety program initiatives
  • Perform other duties as required
Qualifications:
  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or related materials field required
    • Minimum of four years of materials science experience including practical manufacturing or industrial related experience required
    • Experience with injection molding process and materials suppliers required
    • Knowledge of materials qualification tools required
    • Knowledge of polymers, additives, and compounds required
  • Preferred:
    • Master’s or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, or related materials field preferred
    • Knowledge of metals, textiles, ceramics, glass and adhesives preferred
    • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance standards preferred
    • Presentation and project management skills preferred
