Responsibilities
The technologist is responsible for instructing and administering a variety of pulmonary diagnostic tests. All procedures are performed with only the patient and technologist in the testing room. Must have excellent communication and patient assessment skills. Ensures that tests meet or exceed the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and European Respiratory Society (ERS) standards and follow the guidelines incorporated in the laboratory's standard policy and procedure manual (SOPs). Responsible for reviewing patient test results and independently making decisions for additional testing according to lab protocol. Is accountable for calibration, proper use, and routine maintenance of all equipment. Responsible for accuracy and completeness of work performed.
Qualifications
A credentialed Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT), or a Respiratory Therapist licensed by the State of Minnesota would qualify for the position. For a non-credentialed candidate, this position requires 62 semester hours of college credits including college credit level courses in biology and mathematics. The candidate would be trained on the job but required to successfully pass the CPFT (and/or RPFT) exam within three years of employment. Approximately 6-12 months is necessary to acquire a good working knowledge of most job responsibilities to prepare for the exam . Previous experience working with patients/people is preferred including but no limited to healthcare, coaching, childcare, education, etc.
The position requires independent problem solving and the ability to be an effective team member. Must have good human relation and exceptional communication skills as 70-80% of time is spent instructing the patient on test performance. A Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (within three years of employment) or a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the State of Minnesota. Current Basic Life Support training is required prior to starting in the position.
