Working/Functional TitleLinux Engineer IIPosition SummaryApplication Engineering is responsible for the system administration of approximately 1700 managed Linux and Windows servers, application load balancing, web hosting, and product administration for IBM Cognos and Tableau suites.Reporting to the Applications Engineering Manager, the Linux Engineer II position will provide technical operations and support for the management of over 1000 Linux systems including implementation, support, and maintenance. Experience in RedHat Linux administration, Ansible, and Puppet is required. Expected to be fluent in network, security, and application administration topics relating to system administration and processes. Work with MSU's diverse community to find solutions and work to implement those solutions. Responsible for the escalating issues to vendor support as needed. Willingness to work outside of standard business hours and be available as part of a 24x7 on-call rotation. Exceptional customer service skills with superior oral and written communication skills necessary to consult with customers, manage projects and tactfully manage sensitive situations. Capable of mentoring and sharing experience and knowledge with other team members. Team members are expected to maintain and increase their technical knowledge through coursework, workshops, independent study and seminars.Michigan State University (MSU) is a top 100 global university located in East Lansing, three miles east of the state’s capitol. Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Desired QualificationsExperience management of large scale Linux environments using automation and processes. Experience in network engineering, security engineering, solution architect or application development with an understanding of the OSI Model, TCP/IP, SSL offload, Load balancing, SNAT, 2-factor authentication, DNS, IPv6, Wireshark. Knowledge of logical and physical networks, network security, and application development; Experience overseeing large, complex or critical information technology projects. Ability to analyze and evaluate current and future business procedures or problems to define needs. Experience in system administration on a large scale through automation tooling.
