Description:
Position Overview
  • Winship's Integrative Oncology Specialist will provide naturopathic oncology support for patients diagnosed with cancer through targeted and personalized recommendations aimed at reducing patient side effects, optimizing conventional care, and preventing recurrence or disease progression.
  • The naturopathic doctor will serve as an advisor to clinical staff regarding herb-drug interactions and help guide the development of integrative health and medicine initiatives at Winship Cancer Institute.
  • This will include, but is not limited to, collaborating with colleagues in clinical care and research endeavors, conducting group visits, creating meaningful online content, and developing personalized recommendations for integrative patient care, as well as serving as a resource in other clinical and academic capacities.
  • Offering cutting edge integrative medicine care can help differentiate a cancer institute from other local centers, can improve patient satisfaction, and can optimize patient outcomes.
Roles and Responsibilities *
  • Serve in clinical, naturopathic oncology support to both patients and to professional colleagues as part of an integrative team care approach to offer customized integrative and naturopathic medicine treatments to patients.
  • (The following published Principles of Care Guidelines are used in Naturopathic Oncology care: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6380648/) * Prescribe integrative and naturopathic oncology support recommendations and therapies and refer out for the administration of said therapies in compliance with state regulatory bodies* *
  • Obtain naturopathic history and perform naturopathic assessment on patients as appropriate
  • Formulate naturopathic treatment recommendations in concert with conventional care team
  • Protect patients: ensure the safe use of nutraceuticals * Assist with tolerance of treatments and side effects
  • Assist with recovery and survivorship
  • Document all naturopathic oncology support care information in patient medical records
  • Improve quality of life and answers patient questions * Participate in clinical research efforts as needed
  • Continually evaluate the condition of patients receiving oncology support services both in in-patients and ambulatory outpatients (AOP) settings.
  • Complete naturopathic consults as needed in various clinical medical specialties and departments as needed
  • Support medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists along with the multidisciplinary team
  • Conduct oncology patient visits, including group visits
  • Educate patients and consult professional colleagues about health care management and the use of naturopathic oncology support in various stages of patient care
  • Develop both professional academic and patient-centric educational material and resources for in-person and virtual use
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times, including discretion in discussing treatment in the proximity of other patients and/or visitors
  • Maintain professional development through participation in Continuing Medical Education (CME) events
  • As the scope of a naturopathic doctor modernizes and expands under the state's regulatory bodies, the role of the naturopathic doctor at Winship Cancer Institute may also expand to a more independent and comprehensive naturopathic medical role.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree from a naturopathic medical school accredited by the Council for Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME).
  • Incumbent must maintain licensure in at least one U.S. state that licenses Naturopathic Physicians.
