We are hiring for an Associate Director to lead our Analysis & Interpretation Bioinformatics Team. The Analysis & Interpretation team plays the critical role of drawing insight from data supporting internal R&D, external collaborators, and customers alike. In this role, the team lead will guide efforts in data analysis and interpretation leveraging a broad skillset across data science, machine learning, and computational biology. Naturally, a major component of this role will be helping interpret how diverse experimental factors influence the performance of components of our one-of-a-kind single-molecule protein and proteoform quantification platform. The scope of the data encountered by the team covers a broad range. For example, there may be a need to analyze next generation sequencing data one day, single-molecule fluorescence imaging data the next, and protein kinetic data the next! Additionally, a key responsibility will be working with experimentalists to design experiments to test different hypotheses around factors driving the performance of our platform. Our novel proteomic technology is still in its formative stages, which means that anyone in this role will be able to have a meaningful & outsized impact on our technology and on the company’s path to future success.
This position will report to the Director, Bioinformatics. Location can be in San Carlos, CA; Seattle, WA; or San Diego, CA.
Responsibilities
Lead the bioinformatics team responsible for supporting analysis and interpretation of experimental data.
Develop and apply statistical learning approaches to generate clear, actionable statements and visuals from biologically relevant datasets.
Devise and deploy custom machine learning approaches where applicable.
Provide feedback and guidance to wet-lab scientists on experimental design.
Collaborate with the software team to integrate novel analytical approaches into production tooling.
Develop the technical expertise, managerial skills, strategic thinking, and communications abilities of the Bioinformatics Analysis & Interpretation team.
Draft quarterly and yearly plans for the team and align with cross-functional team leads.
Serve as the technical representative for the Bioinformatics Analysis and Interpretation team company wide.
Requirements
A PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Data Science or similar field.
10+ years of experience in developing and applying bioinformatic analyses in the fields of proteomics or genomics.
5+ years of experience in a bioinformatics leadership role.
Excellent track record of leading complex bioinformatics projects throughout all stages, from inception to deployment.
Proven ability to guide experimental design and generate inferences from data using customized approaches in data science.
Expert at applying statistical analysis and visualization approaches to surface insights within various types of data.
Expert at working with imperfect data: data with missing values, batch effects, and confounding factors.
Expert at working with primary data from many different modalities and across a wide range of formats.
Demonstrable experience building analyses spanning hundreds of experiments.
Familiarity with a variety of programming languages, frameworks, and tools, especially Python.
Must have experience with building bespoke analytical approaches and working with raw data.
Strong organization and communication skills, with the ability to lead others both directly and through collaboration.
Ability to have fun when building complex systems while working side-by-side with experts from a variety of disciplines.
Self-motivated, driving projects forward to meet deadlines.
