Job Description

The Internship, reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Northwestern Medicine Information Services Summer Internship presents a valuable opportunity for associates, undergraduate and graduate students to gain an experiential education and for Northwestern Medicine to benefit from the service, skills and knowledge that undergraduate and graduate students can offer.

These 10–12-week paid summer internships are hosted at our downtown Chicago campus. The IS internship provides an unparalleled experience for select aspiring healthcare IT leaders throughout the Northwestern Medicine system.

Northwestern Medicine understands that technology plays an integral role in shaping the future of health care. Information Services strategically supports the organization by:

  • Leveraging AI, automation and rollout of advanced cyber controls that support digital transformation strategies
  • Implementing advanced technologies in clinical and administrative areas
  • Furthering development of the end user support model to help enhance modern infrastructure

The Northwestern Medicine IS Internship program is broken up into 5 domain areas: 

Technical Support and Networking Roles

  • Basic technical support (hardware, software, operating system)
  • Prepare equipment for deployment
  • Troubleshooting and resolving network issues
  • Basic Cisco Unified Communications move/add/change requests (MACD)
  • Assist with software installations and updates
  • Key Skills: Basic computing hardware/software support, customer service, multitasking, experience with Cisco platforms, scripting languages

Analytics and Data Roles

  • Problem-solving, coding, building dashboards
  • Various data pulls and report creation
  • Complete a project, code reviews, attend update meetings
  • Projects focused on providing data and analytics support
  • Key Skills: SQL, PowerBI, clear communication, Databricks, Python, basic SQL and database knowledge, data visualization

Digital and Consumer Products Roles

  • Support UX Designers, design page wireframes and user interfaces
  • Contribute to information architecture and content strategy
  • Support usability testing and research
  • Run and review website analytics reports
  • Key Skills: Digital User Experience or User Centered Design degree, familiarity with UX software (Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite), experience designing user interfaces, information architecture, analytics-related degree, experience with Google Analytics

Development and Automation Roles

  • Participate in team meetings, support application development
  • Learn programs/tools/languages, experiment with new technologies
  • Creating analytics dashboards, building custom APIs
  • Building RPA (robotic processing) in Power Automate
  • Key Skills: Strong communication, problem-solving, adaptability, teamwork, understanding of/experience with Azure, Power BI, Visual Studio, Office 365 Power Platform, .NET, SQL, Blazor, C#, Power Platform products

Project Management, Construction, and Innovation Roles

  • Attend design meetings and site walks
  • Work with contracted vendors, prepare equipment for deployment
  • Schedule construction-related activities
  • Document deployment activities
  • Key Skills: Experience with computer hardware, project management, inventory management, budgeting, network topology, degrees in Information Technology, Computer Networking, experience with Microsoft applications, entrepreneurial mindset, innovation degrees, IS, Management, or Communication degrees

Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine.
  • Successfully complete projects and work tasks assigned.
  • Develop a working knowledge of hospital operations to a degree that allows for the successful completion of projects supporting a variety of hospital operations.
  • Develop working relationships with staff and management that allows for successful business interactions across all levels of the organization.
  • Participation in activities designed for development of interns during their assignment at Northwestern Medicine; which include:
    • New Employee Orientation
    • Networking Opportunities with Senior Leadership
    • Networking Opportunities with other college internship groups within the Northwestern Medicine hospital system
    • Professional Workshops
    • Departmental Presentations led by IS leadership
    • Completion of Intern Innovation Challenge Project & Individual Presentation

Qualifications

Required:

  • Candidates must have a High School Diploma or the General Equivalent and have completed at least 2 semesters in an Associates or undergraduate program or 30 credit hours.
  • The most promising applications demonstrate superior academic performance, leadership skills,and relevant healthcare experience.
  • Interns project maturity, professionalism, and initiative.
  • Candidates must be comfortable in complex organizations and display a passion for a career in healthcare IT.

Preferred:

  • Completion of at least the sophomore year of study.
