About the Program

The OpenAI Residency is a six-month program designed to enable exceptional engineers and researchers from diverse fields to transition into artificial intelligence.

We look for candidates with excellent track records and high potential. OpenAI has long been home to many self-taught researchers and engineers and we seek out candidates both inside and outside of traditional education and work settings. The program strives to include a diverse set of skills and backgrounds that reflect the human experience so our work can do the same.

About the Role
As a Resident, you will be integrated into our research teams with mentorship from an experienced OpenAI Researcher. We expect Residents to ramp up over the six month program to become full time contributors.

The OpenAI Residency is ideal for researchers specializing in fields outside of deep learning like mathematics, physics, or neuroscience. The program can also work well for exceptionally talented software engineers who seek to transition into Research based positions in the field of AI Research.

This program is based in our San Francisco, California HQ. We offer a flexible work environment, encouraging Residents to come into the office at least 3 days a week. We will also provide relocation assistance as needed. We do not allow Residents to work remotely or from our satellite offices.

We expect you to be:

• Available to join OpenAI full-time after completing the Residency 

• Highly skilled in programming languages and software development

• Very comfortable with advanced math concepts in linear algebra, statistics, probability, and calculus 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Have accomplishments in other domains, such as developing a substantial software system, winning awards in math, science, or programming competitions, or writing widely cited publications

• Have initiated self-study in machine learning fundamentals

• Motivated to discover AI breakthroughs and their potential benefits to humanity

• We expect to accept applications through March 11

• The interview process for this role will include multiple technical assessments over the course of several weeks

• Start dates are flexible and based on team availability
