Job Duties

The Richmond District is seeking an individual to install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices for assigned area(s). Perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance. As an Operator Sign, you will:

  • respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
  • demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
  • participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, concrete pipe replacement, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
  • complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.


VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12 month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • experience setting up work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations
  • demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
  • skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
  • skill in general carpentry sufficient to install, maintain, and repair roadway signs and posts
  • skill in mathematics used in carpentry and calculating distance
  • ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
  • ability to maintain inventory records and complete paperwork
  • ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
  • ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays

Preferred Qualifications:

  • experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repair
  • certifications in Basic and Intermediate Work Zone Safety, Flagging, First Aid, CPR and Chainsaw Safety
  • inventory experience
  • experience maintaining records
  • experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up
  • valid CDL

“VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.”

Verification of work history, DMV records check, and a fingerprint-based criminal history check will be conducted prior to first day of employment. Pre-employment physical will be required, to include a drug screen for CLP or CDL holders. Safety shoes are required in performance of job duties, which are a reimbursable item.

NOTE: Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete the Intermediate Work Zone course, and obtain a DEQ Land Disturber Certification within 6 months of employment.

VDOT is an emergency response agency. This position is essential requiring you to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.
