Under the supervision of the Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) Associate Director - Veterinary Services, the LAR Training Coordinator is responsible for developing and overseeing the animal care training program at Princeton University. This program covers the onboarding and training of LAR staff as well as students, research staff, and faculty who perform research involving animals. The LAR Training Coordinator provides training verification and record keeping consistent with applicable regulatory requirements.
Training Program Oversight:• Develop training guides and instructional documents.• Keep abreast of developments in methods, standards, and requirements for training in animal research and adult learning.• Engage with staff across multiple levels to foster a collaborative approach to identifying needs for training and standardization of processes.• Collaborate closely with colleagues in Environmental Health and Safety to formalize and augment trainings related to general safety, ergonomics, and biosafety.• Collaborate closely with colleagues in Research Integrity and Assurance to formalize and augment trainings related to IACUC-mandated corrective action plans.• Develop and oversee a "train the trainer" program to ensure consistency in how staff members and researchers tasked with training others are delivering content.• Document and verify completion of all training.
Onboarding:• Onboard new LAR employees under the direction of the LAR Management team.• Conduct hands-on training to ensure that the care provided to laboratory animals is consistent with departmental, institutional, local, state and federal regulations, AAALAC accreditation standards and industry best practices.• Conduct orientation, seminar, and/or wet-lab trainings for students, research staff, and faculty who perform research involving animals.
Staff development:• Create and deliver a comprehensive training program for staff using various training techniques (e.g. e-learning, coaching, classroom training, hands-on instruction) to enhance employees' skills, understanding, and performance.• Identify, facilitate, and create opportunities for professional development and continuing education for staff, including establishing a forum for staff members to learn more about the research they are supporting.• Develop and deliver a training program for animal care technicians in preparation for AALAS Certification examinations.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs):• Drive the development and documentation of internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the animal care operations team in close collaboration with the LAR Management Team.• Create, review, and update SOPs and associated training modules. Provide training to staff on pertinent changes.• Oversee the management and periodic review of internal SOPs and associated materials.• Assist with reviewing and updating IACUC-approved SOPs and other documents.• Work with teams to implement SOP changes smoothly, ensuring minimal disruption tooperations.
• May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities
A minimum of 5 years work experience in laboratory animal care management with an increasing level of responsibility in work history. AALAS certification at Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or higherStrong oral and written communication skills.Advanced computer and presentation skills.Proficiency in various training platforms and techniques.Excellent collaboration and motivational skills.Ability to plan, manage time and multitask effectively.Strong attention to detail and ability to problem-solve.
PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Experience, and Other Education
Experience working in ABSL-2 conditions preferred.LATg or CMAR certification preferred.
