At Probably Good, our mission is to empower people to build careers that are good for them and good for the world. Our reach has grown rapidly over the past year, and with a substantial new grant from Open Philanthropy and a new Executive Director leading the org, we’re ready to scale our services and expand our team!
This is a great opportunity to join our small organization at a pivotal time—taking on a high-impact role that could shape the careers of millions of people. You’ll be joining a remote, flexible, and collaborative team that values meaningful work and keeps bureaucracy to a minimum, so we can focus on what truly matters and make things happen together.
This role has two potential focus areas: working with organizations and directly advising people in a 1-1 setting. Ideally, you’d be able to tackle both sides of this role (with flexibility on how much time is spent in each), but we’re very open to candidates who are interested in only one part of this role.
Lead collaborations with other organizations for initiatives for our job board.
Coordinate, promote, and run workshops with various EA and university groups.
Represent Probably Good at events, such as EAGx conferences.
Build relationships with partners, including meta-organizations like CEA and EA UK, to connect with group organizers.
Conduct 1-1 advising sessions with people seeking personalized career guidance.
People-oriented - You’re good at connecting with people, understanding their needs, and helping them think through challenges, all while maintaining a professional approach with different individuals and organizations.
Impact-focused - An impact-focused approach to careers resonates with you, and you’re motivated to help others have high-impact careers, while also appreciating that different people have unique circumstances and needs to balance alongside impact.
Proactive in outreach (especially as the groups lead) - You’re eager to find ways to extend Probably Good’s reach in various ways, like reaching out to university career services, networking with stakeholders, or participating in events.
Familiarity with EA landscape (especially as the groups lead) - You understand the major stakeholders and viewpoints within Effective Altruism, and ideally even have some connections within the EA community.
Analytical mindset (especially as an advisor) - You enjoy helping people navigate complex situations, thinking critically about their specific challenges, and offering thoughtful advice to guide them toward the best path forward.
Interest in understanding different cause areas and career paths (especially as an advisor) - You’re not expected to know everything in advance or become an expert, but it’s important to be interested in learning enough that you can advise people effectively.
Strong organizational skills - You feel comfortable managing ongoing processes – like outreach, scheduling, feedback – and keeping things running smoothly day-to-day.
Time-zone flexibility - You’re able to meet with people across different time zones (mainly from the UK to the West Coast U.S.). Note that we prioritize work-life balance, so we’ll encourage you to take time off to make up for any odd hours you need to work.
We’re a small, remote team with a startup mentality, so we’re looking for people who align with our values and approach:
Shared mission - You’re aligned with Probably Good’s mission to help more people build impactful careers, balancing considerations of scale with those of personal fit.
High level of ownership - You take responsibility for your work, can work independently, and see tasks through to completion.
Dependability - When you say you'll do something, we can count on it—if anything comes up, you’ll keep us in the loop and ask for support when needed.
Transparency - You’re open about your reasoning and decisions, helping the team stay in sync and moving forward.
Good communication & a collaborative spirit - You’re a strong collaborator who shares ideas and opinions with clarity and kindness. You can disagree constructively when needed and respond well to feedback.
Above all, we’re looking for people who can contribute consistently, both individually and collaboratively, while being open to feedback and growth. At our small organization, each team member plays a key role in shaping our work and making a real difference. We try to keep the focus on results, minimize unnecessary processes, and give you the space and support to get things done.
Seniority - We’re open to hiring people with different levels of experience, especially for the groups/advising lead and the developer roles.
Titles - We’re flexible about titles and happy to discuss them with you at the offer stage, especially given the different directions that some of these roles can take.
Salary - We offer a competitive salary, which will depend on experience and location.
Full-time/part-time - We’re currently planning to hire for the roles full time, but are open to hiring part time for the right candidates.
Location - We’re a fully remote team, currently based primarily in the UK and US, but we’re open to candidates in most locations. Our only requirements are that you’re legally allowed to work where you’re based (since we don’t currently sponsor work visas), and that you can attend any relevant meetings.
Start date - We prefer people who could start sooner rather than later, but we understand that you might have previous commitments, so we’re open to extending our timeline for the right candidates.
Application deadline - 5 January 2025, 11:59 PM GMT
In addition, the nature of our mission requires us to consider multiple perspectives, which is only possible by making Probably Good an inclusive and welcoming place to work. We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive team and encourage qualified candidates to apply regardless of factors like gender, race, sexual orientation, or other identities.
Even if you think that you might not be ‘good enough’ or that your background doesn’t perfectly align but you’re excited about our mission, we encourage you to apply and give us a chance to get to know you. And if you have any concerns or need adjustments for accessibility, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at team@probablygood.org.
