About The Role
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We are seeking an experienced and empathetic lead engineer and thought partner to join our team in NYC. Our ideal candidate has been successful in both early-stage startups and larger organizations. As VP of Engineering, you will play a crucial role in establishing technical architectural choices to support the platform’s growth, giving consideration to database modeling, devops, data privacy, security, and analytics. This is a full-time, in-office position.
HOW YOU'LL CONTRIBUTE
• Lead engineering for our platform, collaborating with Product and Design to make sound technical architecture choices and deliver new functionality.
• Shape the engineering practice at Project Healthy Minds, setting engineering OKRs, leading engineering culture, and hiring a team (FT and contract).
• Promote PHM’s technology practice through thought leadership like blog posts and speaking opportunities.
About You
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Architecture: Architects the system and the supporting technologies needed to enable new and/or enhanced functionality, applying principles that promote availability, reusability, interoperability, and security into the design framework.
• Backend Architecture Development: Design, develop, and maintain the backend infrastructure for the mental health services marketplace, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.
• Data Engineering: Work on data pipelines, data modeling, and data processing tasks to manage and analyze large datasets related to mental health services selected and user interactions on our website.
• User Analytics: Implement event tracking software to capture user interactions, behavior patterns, and engagement metrics to optimize the platform's performance and user experience.
• DevOps Ownership: Own the continuous integration and continuous deployment pipeline, troubleshoot performance, and keep our services running seamlessly.
• Cloud Administration: Own the operation of the technological infrastructure of an organization and transferring specific functions and procedures to a cloud-based platform.
• Front End Engineering: Work with product designers and other engineers to ensure high-quality delivery of a front end experience.
REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field/practical experience
• 10+ years of programming experience with proven experience as a full stack developer, with expertise in backend development preferably with Typescript or Python
• Demonstrated proficiency in building web applications using frameworks like NextJS (which is what we currently use)
• Strong understanding of database technologies and data warehousing
• Familiarity configuring and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and testing frameworks (Jest/Playwright)
• Familiarity with administering applications on Google Cloud or similar
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
• Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
• Passionate about the mental health space
NICE TO HAVES
• Experience building an engineering team in a startup environment.
• Experience integrating generative AI tools into your development process, e.g. Co-pilot, Cursor, etc.
• Experience deploying AI/ML products or features to production, including for providing recommendations.
• Experience building data-intensive products for experts
• Experience with navigating HIPAA and privacy compliance

The annual salary for this role is $225,00 - $250,000, depending on experience, skills, and other relevant considerations.
