Company Description

We are looking for a Sport Content Editor to join our Sport Audience Central team on a 6 month fixed term contract, to plan, commission, create and deliver high quality sports content across our Reach regional sports brands. 

This is a pivotal role within the Central team, providing content and support with distribution to boost reader engagement. With a key focus on football, but also covering other sports based on potential audience opportunities, we are looking for a highly skilled writer and sports expert, ready to step up into a Content Editor role.

We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.

This role is on a 6 month fixed term contract. 

This role is home based and we are therefore open to candidates based across the UK.

Job Description

What will the role involve?

You will plan, commission, create and edit sports content for various Reach regional sports desks. You will carefully review and sub edit content to ensure all published content is accurate and in line with IPSO code. You will liaise with regional teams regularly throughout your shifts, keeping up to date with talking points, trending topics and areas of interest around our football clubs and other items leading the sports news agenda.

You will use your strong working knowledge of CUE and laying out stories to optimise audience engagement. You will utilise data and analytics to spot audience opportunities. You will help redefine trending content to bring maximum value to our audience. You will adopt a referrer led approach, with an onus on search traffic and an ability to promote content across social media platforms. This role will involve some weekend and evening working so a flexible approach is required.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

Essential:

  • NCTJ qualification or equivalent/time served, with in depth knowledge of media law is essential
  • A proven track record of writing sport content at a senior writer/reporter level in a digital publishing environment is essential
  • Experience in publishing and distributing sport content using social media platforms including, but not limited to, Facebook is essential
  • Knowledge of and interest in SEO, search and how to generate audience engagement from Google is essential

Desirable:

  • Strong working knowledge of CUE and an understanding of CVS referrers, including sending newsletters, WhatsApp messages, web alerts and homepage management is highly desirable
  • You are a first class writer who can write compelling headlines, with an excellent sense for what stories drive high audience engagement
  • You have excellent communication skills and can motivate and support members of your team
