How to Apply

Description

A research opportunity is currently available with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of Health (NIH) located in Bethesda, Maryland.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) offers a unique training and research environment for basic and clinical neuroscience through a wide range of programs aimed at furthering the professional training and career development of students, health professionals and research scientists.

What will I be doing?

Participants in the NINDS intramural program learn how to conduct research in the basic, translational, and clinical neurosciences at the NINDS Bethesda, Maryland, laboratories. Interests cover a broad range of neuroscience research including molecular biophysics, synapses and circuits, neuronal development, integrative neuroscience, brain imaging, neurological disorders, and stroke.

Why should I apply?

IRTA Appointments are established for the principal benefit of the participant and to provide opportunities for developmental training and practical research experience in a variety of disciplines related to biomedical research, medical library research and related fields. Appointments are designed to provide research training “for which fellowship support is not provided under Section 487 of the Public Health Services (PHS) Act, and which is not residency training of physicians or other health professionals” to provide recent college graduates (graduated no more than two years prior to activation of Appointment) an introduction to individuals early in their careers to the research field; encourage their pursuit of professional careers in biomedical research; and allow additional time to pursue successful application to either graduate or medical school programs.

Where will I be located?

The appointment is full-time at NINDS in the Bethesda, Maryland, area.

Length of Appointment

Typically, appointments start out with one year, but may be renewed yearly up to an additional four years, upon recommendation of NINDS and contingent on the availability of funds. Shorter appointments may also be available upon mentor approval.

Benefits

The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. (Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program).

Nature of Appointment

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Participants do not become employees of NIH, NINDS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have graduated with a bachelor's degree from a fully accredited U.S. college or university no more than 5 years prior to the activation date of the appointment and intend to apply to graduate school in biomedical research or medical school within the next year or be students who have been accepted into graduate, other doctoral or medical degree programs and who have written permission from their school to delay entrance for up to 1 year.

A complete application consists of:

  • Completed Zintellect profile
