Kite is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the development of innovative cancer immunotherapies with a goal of providing rapid, long-term long-lasting response and eliminating the burden of chronic care. The company is focused on chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) and T cell receptor (TCR) engineered cell therapies designed to empower the immune system's ability to recognize and kill tumors.

The preclinical process development team is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join the group. The preclinical process development team sits within Research and partners with cross-functional teams to develop innovative CAR-T therapy for treating patients. Specifically, this team is accountable for developing fit-for-purpose and stage-appropriate T cell therapy bioprocess and plays a key role in advancing pipeline candidates. Current pipelines include autologous and allogeneic cell therapies which apply novel manufacturing approaches and pioneering technologies.

Responsibilities:

The exceptional and motivated candidate will join the group in a key role. The Research Scientist will lead the effort for developing T cell bioprocess to advance pipeline candidates using emerging and innovative approaches, process characterization, and technology transfer partnering with cross-functional teams.

  • Lead efforts to develop and optimize process parameters towards several T cell manufacturing platforms, focusing on in-process metabolic modulation and media supplement/cytokine development, to deliver potent and long lasting CAR-T cell therapy
  • Play a key role in T cell bioprocess development initiatives to enable stage-appropriate process development and characterization, utilizing novel process analytical technologies (PAT) and bioreactor systems
  • Work in close collaboration with cross-functional teams for pipeline candidate advancement
  • Develop fit-for-purpose assays to characterize process parameter-driven T cell immuno- and energy metabolic phenotypes to inform T cell potency and persistency
  • Mentor junior scientist in informal setting
  • Communicate plans and scientific results in both oral and written form
  • Coordination of tasks across multiple projects, demonstrating prioritization and planning, managing timelines and deliverables
  • Keep electronic notebook and batch record.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate OR
  • Master’s and 6+ years of scientific experience OR
  • Bachelor’s and 8+ years of scientific experience OR
  • Associate and 10+ years of scientific experience OR
  • High School Diploma/GED and 12+ years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with development of unit operations applicable in the manufacturing of genetically engineered T cell-based therapy
  • Advanced cell culture techniques with preference for human T cell or other immune cell types
  • Proficient in utilizing analytical methods characterizing and understanding cell therapy product
  • In-depth understanding of immune metabolism
  • Knowledge of state-of-art cell therapy bioprocess technologies
  • Proficiency in operating closed systems in cell therapy manufacturing
  • Demonstrated achievement to be self-motivated, creative, and work both independently and within a highly adaptable team environment
  • Comfortable in a exciting company and able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities
  • Thorough organizational skills and record keeping
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in a collaborative work environment

The salary range for this position is: $149,600.00 - $193,600.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
