School Social Worker

General Purpose:

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Student Services, or designee, the School Social Worker serves as a liaison between home, school, and community in order to facilitate the students' appropriate personal/social adjustment.

The following Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, and Key Duties and Responsibilities are given by way

of example, are not intended to be all inclusive, and are not set forth in order of importance.

Qualifications:

1. Earned master's of social work from an accredited school of social work with a minimum of 60 graduate hours.

2. Supervised practicum or field experience of a minimum of 400 clock hours in an accredited school discharging the duties of a school social worker or completion of a minimum of one year full-time supervised successful experience as a school social worker in an accredited school.

3. School social work practice: 3 semester hours at the graduate level.

4. A minimum of 6 graduate semester hours distributed in at least two of the following: school law; school administration; assessment and evaluation; and education of students with disabilities.

5. Hold or eligible for a license issued by the Virginia Department of Education in School Social Work.

6. Ongoing evidence of mental and physical competence to perform assigned responsibilities may be required from a qualified physician.

7. An applicant who has had prior experience in a related position must have a performance rating acceptable to Stafford County Public Schools for such experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of a variety of assessment instruments and techniques for diverse populations.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of community agencies/resources.

3. Demonstrate appropriate use of oral and written communication skills; thorough knowledge of

English grammar and usage.

4. Demonstrate effective time management and organizational skills.

5. Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to the NSAW Code of Ethics.

6. Demonstrate the ability to adhere to Guidelines of Confidentiality as outlined in Federal and State laws and county policies and procedures.

7. Demonstrate knowledge of child development and growth stages.

8. Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication and human relations skills with students, staff members, parents, and administrators.

9. Demonstrate knowledge of curriculum and instructional programs.

10. Demonstrate knowledge of current special education regulations, issues, and related laws.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Serve as a liaison between the school and the family.

2. Confer with school personnel to bring information relating to the home which may be helpful in working with a student.

3. Assist school personnel in matters related to school attendance.

4. Provide for an effective working relationship with students, parents, school personnel, and others concerned with student welfare.

5. Assist others in assessing the needs of students.

6. Serve as a participant on the school's Child Study Committee, Eligibility Committee, and Crisis

Intervention Team to assist in meeting the student's individual needs.

7. Assist in the process of referring students and families to appropriate community resources.

8. Consult with school personnel, parents, and other appropriate individuals to help increase the understanding of students and to help provide an atmosphere conducive to the student’s growth and development.

9. Assist in the development and revision of special programs for individual students which may include IEPs, ITPs, 504 plans and other intervention strategies when appropriate.

10. Adhere to guidelines of confidentiality as outlined in federal and state laws, and School Board Policies and Procedures, and the NASW Code of Ethics.

11. Maintain appropriate case records and documentation.

12. Provide school personnel with general knowledge regarding school social work services.

13. Provide direct social services to students with attendance problems, poor health, emotional/behavioral concerns, and those who are culturally and/or socioeconomically disadvantaged.

14. Consult with parents regarding student adjustment in the school or home situation through various counseling methods.

15. Work cooperatively and collaboratively with community agencies.

16. Prepare sociocultural assessment on students referred for special education consideration within required time lines.

17. Conduct short-term individual and/or group counseling when deemed appropriate and as time permits.

18. Maintain a record of appropriate attendance and punctuality.

19. Serve as an optimal role model for students, colleagues, and the general public.

20. Maintain a clean, neat appearance, appropriate to position.

21. Must work in close harmony with colleagues, supervisors, and co-workers.

22. Actively pursue professional growth activities.

23. Comply with all district and school policies and regulations.

24. Perform other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment: 10 months according to Stafford County School Board calendar

Evaluation: Evaluation will be conducted in accordance with School Board

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: From $49,000.00 per year

  • 8 hour shift

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Stafford, VA: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
