Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Second Class Fireperson position. The Second Class Fireperson is a full-time, year-round position. Starting salary is commensurate with experience. Minimally qualified candidates could expect to see a starting salary of $30 per hour. Given Amherst’s distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
Support Central Energy Plant efforts to oversee, operate, and maintain the high-pressure steam plant and cogeneration plant in a safe and efficient manner. Perform repairs and maintenance on high pressure boilers and associated equipment. Requires attention to detail, problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and function efficiently under extreme conditions. The Second Class Fireperson works collaboratively with a diverse campus community in respectful, inclusive, collaborative ways.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Operating Equipment
  • Monitor and operate all plant-related equipment, including but not limited to high pressure boilers, heat recovery steam generator and dual fuel gas turbine generator set.
Repairing and Maintaining Systems
  • Clean and maintain building interior and exterior, test and maintain reverse osmosis water purification system for nitrogen oxide emission control, as well as maintain and change ammonia bottles for emission control. Repair pumps, motors, valves, actuators and controls for boilers and associated equipment.
Monitoring and Testing Equipment
  • Record plant readings, and data, blow down the boiler, water column, and test high and low water alarm, test boiler water and adjust chemicals as needed, as well as test and regenerate water softeners. Clean oil strainers at the skid and burner, blow soot on both boilers, monitor, record, and receive fuel oil deliveries.
Qualifications:
Required
  • Massachusetts 2nd Class Fireman’s license or above.
  • 1 to 3 years experience operating a high pressure boiler plant.
  • Ability to maintain, service and repair pumps, valves, actuators, high pressure boilers and associated controls and equipment.
Preferred
  • Massachusetts 1st Class Fireman’s license or above.
  • 5 plus years experience operating a high pressure boiler plant.
