Position Description
RAND has an exciting opportunity for a thoughtful, detail-oriented, early-career Social Media Manager to join the Digital Editorial team. As part of the Public Affairs department in RAND’s Office of External Affairs, Social Media Managers support the execution of our social media strategy. They use their social media/digital communications background and skills to disseminate RAND’s public policy research by crafting and scheduling high-quality promotional content; highlighting and amplifying RAND researchers’ perspectives; and executing the day-to-day administration of our social channels.

This position reports to the Managing Editor, Digital, and collaborates closely with the Senior Social Media Manager to support outreach objectives while modeling and safeguarding RAND’s reputation as a nonpartisan source of high-quality and objective public policy research and analysis. This encompasses ensuring accuracy, quality, and consistency in voice, along with cultivating a positive and engaged social media following by curating RAND content in a clear and approachable way.

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • In alignment with RAND’s reputation and social media strategy, elevate the organization’s profile by developing clear, accurate, and engaging social media content that aligns with RAND’s commitment to quality and objectivity; assisting with campaigns to grow social media participation by RAND researchers; and helping shape pilots to experiment with emerging approaches and channels.
  • Assist in the creation and execution of compelling and appropriate social media campaigns that build on RAND’s brand, engage target audiences, and complement other digital efforts.
  • Contribute to editorial planning and attend weekly editorial meetings; implement established plans by maintaining social channels; stay current on editorial/social dashboard assignments; ensure that high-quality social posts are published in a timely fashion.
  • Assist the Senior Social Media Manager in coordinating with stakeholders across the organization to encourage the adoption of effective and responsible social media techniques; assist with training and support in creating content, as needed.
  • Monitor organizational peer activities and benchmarks; measure the impact of social media activities; assist efforts to analyze, review, and report on effectiveness.
  • Share insights from social media monitoring/listening with Office of External Affairs stakeholders, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Digital Editorial colleagues to experiment with emerging social media platforms.
  • Stay current on social media trends; document processes and best practices.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Demonstrated ability to write for social media platforms
  • Strong attention to detail, reading-comprehension skills, and editorial judgment
  • Ability to communicate professionally with all stakeholders
  • Experience with social media management tools, such as Sprout Social or Hootsuite
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, their users, and how they can be used to engage audiences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of brand and reputation-management principles
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative teams and build and maintain relationships with colleagues in the Office of External Affairs and beyond
  • Flexibility and adaptability, including the ability to positively receive and respond to all levels of feedback
  • Excellent time- and task-management skills

Preferred:
  • Demonstrated passion and curiosity about social media, including emerging platforms
  • Previous experience in social media marketing, public relations, digital journalism
  • Previous experience working in an academic/public policy environment
  • Familiarity with project management principles and practices
  • Experience advising other departments/teams/individuals in social media topics
  • Experience with collaboration tools, such as Teams, Jira, and Workfront
Education Requirements
A bachelor’s degree is required. Degrees in English, public relations, journalism, communications, or related fields are desirable.
Experience
A minimum of one year of relevant digital/social media experience is required.
Location
This position will be located at one of the following RAND offices: Arlington, Va.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; or Santa Monica, Calif. This position is eligible for RAND’s hybrid work environment, which enables a blend of on-site and remote work. Some on-site presence will be required to meet business needs, including on an ad-hoc basis; on-site needs will vary from month to month.

Applicants will be required to provide a portfolio of their social media–related work, uploaded as a work sample.
Salary Range
$54,700 – $81,400
