Job Description

The Jacksonville Public Library is actively seeking one (1) Special Collections Librarian.

This is professional, advanced librarian work providing specialized customer service to researchers of local history, genealogy, and African American history. Serves as assistant manager and person in charge as directed. Work requires an understanding and application of Library Science theories, principles, and practices gained through an American Library Association accredited program with a concentration in special collections, archives or history museum studies. Supports the overall mission of the Library by providing customer service in a manner that creates a positive customer experience. Assigns, monitors, and reviews the work of others. Work involves frequent contact with library customers, co-workers, volunteers, and others requiring skill in understanding people, sensitivity to varying points of view, and persuasiveness necessary to influence behavior, change an opinion, or resolve a situation. Although the work is standardized in that tasks are covered by diversified procedures, because of changing priorities or different situations, employees have the latitude to consider which of the many procedures or standards should be followed and in what sequence. This requires the use of judgment in searching for solutions or new applications. Work performed in an office, library, or community environment to promote Library services. Due to the nature of library operations, the employee may be required to work evenings and on weekends, and at various branch locations. The physical demands consist mainly of moving from one work location to another, sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching and squatting, and using standard office and library equipment on an ongoing basis. May be required to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds and push loaded book trucks weighing up to 50 pounds. Maintains appearance standards by reporting facilities issues and picking up litter on library grounds. The work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, techniques, and/or policies, and the employee plans and organizes the work, determines their own priorities, and the work is reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, volume, timeliness, and adherence to established procedures and policies.

Examples of Work

  • Collaborates with staff members and community partners to provide programming, tours, exhibits, displays, and outreach presentations.
  • Contributes ideas and develops initiatives to meet annual service goals.
  • Identifies unique items within special collections to ensure preservation and promotion.
  • Supports the overall mission of the Library by providing customer service in a manner that creates a positive customer experience.
  • Works with local groups to encourage scholarly study and boarder general appreciation of materials in the collection.
  • Enhances accessibility and publicity of collections with physical displays, guided tours, special showings, and digital conversion.
  • Acts as contact person to local collectors, national and international rare book dealers, bindery, and auction houses for acquisition purposes.
  • Develops, builds and leads special programming.
  • Makes presentations to various community organizations to promote collections and build partnerships.
  • Operates standard office and library equipment such as personal computers using word, spreadsheet, database, and other related software, peripheral and electronic devices, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Performs all work in a safe and courteous manner, including during emergencies.
  • Assists with maintaining appearance standards by reporting facilities issues and picking up litter on library grounds.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • In addition to serving customers using all of the library’s Special Collections, the Special Collections Librarian will be responsible for the development and management of the African American Collection. The Special Collections Librarian will work with the Special Collections Manager to establish collection profiles and selection guidelines for the African American Collection, evaluate existing collection strengths and current collecting focuses for the African American Collection, and establish effective relationships with vendors, organizations, communities, individuals, and colleagues for the purpose of developing collections.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of archival theory and best practices as they relate to the processing, arrangement and description of collections.
  • Knowledge of the library's organization, operation, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of library resource materials and reference sources.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards for creation, description, and online display of digitized materials.
  • Skilled in use of advanced research methods.
  • Skilled in proper handling and basic preservation concepts for primary source materials, both analog and digital.
  • Skilled in identifying unique items within special collections, ensuring preservation and promotion.
  • Ability to collaborate with community organizations to develop and provide programs, tours, and events to promote the scholarly study and broader general appreciation of special collections.
  • Ability to connect with local collectors, national and international rare book dealers, binderies and auction houses for acquisition purposes.
  • Ability to use computer databases to include computerized catalog and circulation systems.
  • Ability to interview and gather data.
  • Ability to understand and apply Library Science theories, principles, and practices including classification systems.
  • Ability to assign, monitor, and review the work of others.
  • Ability to serve as person in charge as directed.
  • Ability to interpret rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to provide positive customer service in a library setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to operate standard office and library equipment such as personal computers using word, spreadsheet, database, and other related software, peripheral and electronic devices, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and to provide services in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner.
  • Must have ability to travel between various locations to meet the assignments of the position.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

  • A Masters' Degree from an accredited institution in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program and
  • Two years of Special Collections, History Museum or Archives experience.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
  • Depending on assignment, a valid driver's license is required and must be maintained.
  • Depending on assignment, City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is twelve months.
