Job Description Summary
The search will remain open until the position has been filled. First consideration will be given to applications received by June 30, 2023. BASIC FUNCTION:
Enact strategies to support Metcalf Institute’s goal of centering equity, inclusion, and intersectional perspectives in science communication. Develop, implement, and evaluate professional development sessions and fee-based training programs for students and professionals that support Metcalf Institute’s inclusive science communication work. Lead organization of biennial Inclusive SciComm Symposium. Build and sustain strong working relationships with Metcalf Institute partners within URI and externally. Develop new partnerships and collaborate with partners to support and expand the global Inclusive SciComm community of practice.
Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and sustain partnerships with individuals and organizations designed to expand and support the global Inclusive SciComm community of practice, including but not limited to identifying programming needs, identifying and/or creating relevant resources, and facilitating networking.
Implement current program strategies related to inclusive science communication and collaborate with Metcalf Institute team to develop the ongoing evolution of our strategy, including issue areas, evaluation of impact, fundraising plans, and organizational capacity.
Contribute to a collegial and collaborative work environment where the values of justice, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are central to the mission.
Assess the leading edge of the inclusive science communication landscape to inform Metcalf Institute strategies and projects by connecting with researchers and practitioners across a diversity of fields, attending and/or representing Metcalf Institute at relevant conferences, and reviewing the relevant scientific literature.
Develop evidence-based programs to engage various audiences in learning about and developing relevant skills for the research and practice of inclusive science communication.
Collaborate with Metcalf Institute team to plan, implement, and evaluate programs, including but not limited to the Inclusive SciComm Symposium, grant-funded workshops and seminars, public lectures and webinars, and fee-based trainings.
Conduct professional development programs in multiple modalities: in-person, synchronous online, and asynchronous online.
Write and/or contribute to proposals to seek external financial support for Metcalf Institute programs.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with Metcalf Institute staff to assign and supervise URI student assistants and interns in tasks related to and in support of program research, development, implementation, and evaluation.
Perform additional duties as needed.
LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers; word processing, database management. Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Asana.
Required Qualifications
REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. Minimum of three years of professional experience in science communication practice, professional development training, community organizing, and/or other related field.
3. Demonstrated experience and dedication to integrating issues of inclusion, equity, social justice and accessibility in your work.
4. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
5. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
6. Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
7. Willingness to learn and/or expand professional skills.
8. Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
9. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
10. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
11. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED:
1. Demonstrated experience as a science communication practitioner and/or trainer.
2. Demonstrated experience with project and/or program development and management.
3. Demonstrated experience with proposal writing.
4. Demonstrated experience with program evaluation of communication activities.
5. Demonstrated experience with asynchronous online program delivery.
